Icon6 Oil type change...

I drive a 2002 Civic Si, with its original K20a3 in it. It has 147,000 miles and had the head rebuilt at 90,000 with new stock replacement parts due to a mis-shift and two bent valves. The exhaust cam also has a tiny knick on one lobe that was hand smoothed down very carefully. If I have been using Synthetic Mobile 1, 5w-20 for about 60,000 miles. I am interested if i should go back to regular oil? Can i do that without harming my car, that is going from synthetic to regular? To save money on oil changes.... How many quarts about, should my K20a3 hold with a fresh filter?

Im interested in some parts and pieces for a 2002 Civic Si. pm me if you are fairly close to Birmingham Alabama, or email me trudd84@hotmail.com I only am willing to meet in person for sales of parts!

And thanks sooooo much for helping me with my "simp" questions!

No but what you should do is start using 5w30 as Honda as suggested a couple of years back due to cam grinding on the 02-03 models! 5w30,5w40 or 10w30 is what I would use! Synthetic is a better oil quality why go back to regular oil for?

I use 5w40 in the summer time as I track the car and in the winter time I use 10w30... I use Motul oil only!

Also Mobil1 is not a full synthetic is a semi-synthetic... just fyi!

Word! What is Motul, and where can it be purchased? what oils on the shelf in Advanced are truly synthetic oils and not a semi synthetic?

"Owner's manuals and service manuals will specify the acceptable oil to use at various temperatures. In warm climates, 10W30 is usually an acceptable alternative to the preferred 5W30 and may be used without measurable adverse effects. In the olden days, before multi-weight oils, it was common to have a winter oil and a summer oil. This is no longer necessary, but if you normally use 10W30 because you live in a warm climate then be sure to switch to 5W30 if you plan on using the vehicle in very cold weather."

"Virtually all new passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. use either 5W30 or 10W30 oil. The difference between the two is that the 5W30 flows better when cold, so if you live in a cold climate or operate your vehicle in a cold climate during the winter months, you should use 5W30 if it is the preferred oil for your vehicle. If you live in a sub-tropical climate and don't operate your vehicle in cold climates, then 10W30 is acceptable as long as the manufacturer specifies that it is permissible to use it."

Sorry but a lot of the new passenger vehicles that are sold in the US and Canada as of present run mostly 5w20 for fuel economy purposes.

i use synthetic 10w30, and i seem to be burning oil. I DO NOT DRIVE AGGRESSIVELY! i drive on average about 15 miles a day and every week i burn a ridiculous amount of oil. I figured 10w30 was thick enough.

I plan on boosting my car in the next month, and i need to figure out this problem before anything happens. What should I do?

to answer a question the OP asked...

Motul is an oil company that make some of the best fully synthetic oils. They have a lot of experience in the racing and automotive/motorcycle industry just like some other good brands I mentioned earlier.

You have to understand one thing, the Kseries engine consume a little more oil then the Bseries. When running in the VTEC it was normal to burn a quart of oil but with the Kseries just under normal driving you can burn up to half a quart! I have tested it on mine and when I am hard on it I burn about 3/4 of a quart when running the Motul 5w40. Normal driving I burn the half a quart as it is normal.

I have spoken to many honda mechanics and some guys who race Kseries powered cars and they all told it is normal for this engine to burn a little more then the old Bseries.
