Default building b17a1 for turbo

hey all..

i have a 91 honda crx si with a b17a1 and ys1 trans in it. i am planning to build the car over the winter. i am not sure which internals to get for boost..I know b17 rods are different from other b series. where do i get good rods, and pistons? would I need to sleeve it? could I keep the stock crank as long as I get it balanced?

i want to run 12s or low 13s in the crx with this motor and turbo and it be my daily driver summer car (i park it every winter to protect from salt, and to build it up)..i just need to find a good place to start and do it right by building the engine first before i add turbo. this will be my first turbo build.

any suggestions or questions?

thanks!

B17 is fine to boost. The head is just like any other B series ( as we all know) the only bad thing is for the b17 the crank is different so you cant run Pauter or Manley rods. You would have to use Crowler Rods. IMHO and speaking as a guy who just built his B17 head and stock crank / block, I would go with a b18c1 gsr block and crank. That way you can save the b17 block and be able to have more rod choices. Thats what I am doing for my next years build so just think about that.

that is a good idea..but i really don't have the money to buy another block. that is something to consider though..i need to tear down the b17 anyway though because i'm pretty sure my piston rings are bad.

If you dont have the money to buy a b18c block then you probably wont have the money to buy rods for that engine. if you want something good its going to be custom as i think only crower makes a stock rod and no other companies.

You can run b16 rods which will give you a world of choices. Then order a set of custom pistons or you can get shelf B16 pistons from say JE with a -9.2 dome which are turbo pistons and have 1-2mm machined off the top of them to give you the deck hieght clearence you need. I personally would recomend custom pistons as they are much cheaper than custom rods.

i would rather not go with anything custom...i'm sort of leaning towards buying another block and using the head off the b17. how is the support for b20 blocks? are they good blocks to build for turbo?

b20 blocks are limited because of the thinner cylinder walls, just pick up a b18a/b block for dirt cheap and run that with the vtec head and a lsvtec kit

should i just get a b18b bare block and put aftermarket internals in? should i buy one with just a crank? i am just going to get a b18b block and build it up and use my vtec head on it..i am still building it for turbo for sure though.

how much do u think my b17 block is worth w/o head? maybe i should sell it complete with trans and head and start from scratch...will my p28 spec'd ecu from phearable work with this setup as long as i have it tuned? haha sorry bout all the questions but i'm pretty much sold on the b18b block w/ vtec head. i can reuse some of my old parts but if i can sell them as a whole for more that would be better so i can buy the parts i want.
