Issues with buying a civic w/o catalytic converter?
There is a craigslist posting of a civic w/o a catalytic converter for like $1900 and I was wondering if purchasing such a vehicle would be problematic whether it'd be a legal issue or an issue of expense. I read that a catalytic converter should cost on a '96 civic sedan in the amount of around $400 and $2300 seems fairly reasonable for the price of the car but I'd like to hear some insight from you guys about why this car wouldn't have a catalytic converter and what it could mean.
Like it doesn't have one as in it has a test pipe? if so, they wanted less backpressure, which means it probably has a full exhaust I would hope, and it doesn't really mean there was something wrong with it. And yes you're in cali, you would need one, infact you will probably need a couple of them, just because you're in cali.
And 400 for a cat is too much, you can pick one up for less than 100 and get it all welded in for another 50 or so..

They care more about the people than the air? Lawl air is what the people breathe and getting better air for california especially LA should be something we're all longing for. My only issue with CARB is that their rules are arbitrary and seem to favor large displacement engines b/c they go by PPM and not grams per mile.
its not too much if he is going oem. 950 or so for an oem one on a 99-00 civic si if i remember right. Often times the aftermarket cat's can go bad as soon as a year later i guess...
you can simply get a magnaflow high flow cat for about 150 bolt on. i just got 1 for my 99 civic sedan, had a gutted cat when i got it from my cousin.

just remember with all these high flow cats they have to be carb legal for cali. It doesnt sound like a bad deal tho. But to the OP, make sure that the engine is legit and able to be bar'd and reffed or whatever they do on the west coast. Im pretty sure that it has to have a legit "vin" badge and be of the right year. It kinda sounds like to me that if the car doesnt have a cat, then they owner was really worried about getting a ticket. So who knows what else could be wrong with the car
Just put a magnaflow in my Si. The box had a new sticker on it saying that it was 49 state legal. Cali I guess isn't too happy with magnaflow.
It could be an LX or DX and the owner wouldnt know that it has one in the manifold.
