weird noise from valvecover
so i noticed my car is running rich (mid 13:1 while cruising) and like 12:1 at idle. whether these things are related or not i dont know.
i pulled the pcv and there is a high pitched whistling come from the vc and it went away when i put the pcv back in, so i pulled the oil cap and its doin the same thing. i thought that was weird, so i put my ear close to the intake filter and could barely hear it sucking air. so i pulled it off and theres quite a bit of oil in the intake tube (aem intake and filter)
and usually when i shut the car off there is that normal loud sucking noise from the intake like any car with an intake, welp now it doesnt do that anymore its now more of a realy quite (sp?) whistling noise.
like i said if any of this is related or not i have no idea, but if someone can explain what might be happeneing to me that would be great.
i just replaced the pcv, it seems like to me maybe high crankcase pressure? but for the intake to sound like its barely sucking air in i have no idea...
sorry forgot to mention this is a h22a
thanks, and sorry for the long post

Sounds like you have a intake mani gasket leak or some kind of vac leak thats why your running rich and thats why you hear that noise.
Most notorious place is the intake manifold. Heres what you do to check. Buy a can of carb cleaner, And spray around the gasket area if it quiets down when u spray you know it has a leak there, if not feel your hoses for cracks and breaks, if nothing still then i'd replace the gasket to eliminate any troubles.

No, not always. Usually idles are caused by iacv sensors but it depends on the leak honestly and how large.
Running rich is caused by a couple things u should check out.
Vac Leaks
o2 Sensors Failing
Distributor Ign coil ( Does it Cut out if u rev 5,000 RPMS and Up? Like Poping or such )
Aftermarket Fuel Regulator?
But the whistling \ would be a vac leak.

well it has a plx wideband for o2 sensor wired in as a wideband and narrowband thats maybe a year old, ive tested the coil and it tested good.
i put a known working ignitor in and it didnt change anything, it has the stock regulator on it running like 38psi.
and the whistling can only be heard when the oil cap or pcv is removed from the valve cover. but when you put those back on the vc the whistling goes away. so the whistling is coming from the inside of the vc.
thanks for the input by the way

What ecu are you using? What kind of tuning? Can you log it to see what the closed loop trims are and verify the narrow band is switching? Maybe the ecu is just set to open loop?
its the stock p13 ecu i dont have any way of logging it, unless i was to hook my s300 p30 up to it but i dont have a map to run it worth a ****.
something i noticed that was weird today i started the car and the af gauge as usual says 14.7:1 for a sec while the o2 is warming up then it slowly worked itself up to 15.1:1 then worked itself back down to mid 13s. welp the weird thing was when it was doing this i could rev the car up and down and it had no effect on what the gauge was reading. it does this everytime i start it up now
you think there could be something wrong with the plx wideband?

OKay i missed the part of only coming from inside when its open okay.
Honestly only thing left i can say it sounds like is a valve not seating all the way down ( Causing compression leak during all cycles this would be hard to determine as its probbly not leaking really bad.
Only other suggestion i'd have is run a compression test, If there close together then Idk, other then pulling the head off and redoing the valves.
Hell, its possiable theres something wrong with the PLX-Wb but its only a year old so idk. Its hard to determine. Running rich isnt coming from your valves though, although your whistling may be

welp i managed to get a compression test done but im missing the hose that connects to the cylinder for my leakdown tester and the one off of my compression tester wouldnt fit...
anyways from the compression test the engine still looks healthy
with the engine compeletely warmed up and WOT i got:
1= 240
2= 240
3= 235
4= 240
so i cant complain about those numbers whatsoever

Thats good compression. Hmm...
When your cars running Get some needle nose pliers and Pinch the hose to your PCV valve, if the pcv clicks then thats not it, if it does come tell me.
Only other thing i can think of is valves not seating propperly idk though man thats something you'd have to pull vc off and have a pro look at it.

You can not diagnose 'a valve not seating properly' by removing ValveCover, you have to unbolt and remove cylinder head, a shop would want to see the whole head before making a diagnosis.
No but,
#1 you need vc off to remove head
#2 you can check your valve clearance while your in in there to see if this could be issue.
Thanks for input but im sure he knew what i ment.

yea the pcv clicks when i squeeze the line shut.
if i can ever find my freaking hose to my leakdown tester that would definately tell me if i have a leaking valve or not.
thanks for the help again

my h22a did about the same thing but I didn't have a wideband. I took it in to R&D motorsports to do a leakdown and they replaced my valves with Ti valves and havent had the problem again
