Default Whinning noise/PS went out!

Sup Honda-tech,

New to the forum..Well i have a bone stock 00 LS and have a problem. Three days ago i noticed a whinning sound coming from the belt/ps pump. When I rev up rpms it gets louder. I would hear it on warm up and it would go away after some driving. I have searched and others have had the same problem and said it was their tension/ps fluid being dirty..

However my problem is..I was taking my last turn going to work and my PS went out completely! So do i have to buy a new pump or should i just try replacing the fluids like others on the forum? Anyone know how much a new pump will cost at a local junk yard?

Thanks guys!

Edit: Sound is still there even with the pump out.

With the edit, I guess it was not the pump. You need to find the source of the noise. What was the PS fluid level?

When mine was going out, it was a constant sound and at first I thought my engine was going out. After I took off teh belt, my car was running Hybrid-quiet.

So if the sound is still there for you, is it the AC or the belt tensioner? Try spraying the tensioner a little bit. I had one that was annoyingly loud once.

I'm pretty sure the Helm' manual calls for white lithium grease.

Spray it with that, not on the belt itself, but on the bolt that holds it in place and the arm it attaches to. If it gets rid of the noise, replace the tensioner pulley.

I'm confused by your question because the fuel pump has nothing to do with the tensioner pulley, or did you mean the PS pump?

Let me see if i get this right. Your car was making noises around the PS pump, and eventually the PS stopped working so you took out the pump but the noise is still there. If that's right, then I think you might have 2 completely separate issues going on. First, spray the tensioner to see if that's causing the sound. Then I would recommend that if it has been a while, for you to flush your PS system

Yeah, it was making noise for a few days, and eventually my PS stopped working. So i guess my pump went out? My question was, since my pump went out, do i have to replace the pump? Sorry for any confusion, i dont know much..

Edit: Wow, i just read my post. I meant power steering pump lol...I was at work and i was rushing to get the post sent.

Well, you had stated that the car still makes noises even after you removed the pump, so that's why I think that you have a couple of problems going on at the same time.

Your PS system is not just going to suddenly short out if you have bad fluid so that's why your issue is most likely the pump.

As far as the noise, if it wasn't coming from the pump, then you only have a couple of options on that side of the vehicle. The PS pump, the Alternator, the AC and the tensioner pulley for the PS pump and AC.

For the noise you have to troubleshoot by trying one fix at a time to pinpoint the issue. Test them out one by one by putting some white lithium grease on the pivot point of each pulley, one at a time.
