I have searched very thoroughly all over before I posted this...

Ok, so I have a 1996 Honda Civic and whenever I start my car up on cold days/ nights or in the morning I hear a very loud whine from the engine bay. If I let it sit for a few minutes to warm up the noise slowly goes away. Now I have heard what a slipping belt or a bad pulley sounds like and it does not sound like either of the two. To me it honestly sounds like the PS steering pump is struggling to pump. But! The noise does not change if I move the wheel from side to side... I am however a bit low on PS fluid so thats why I think its the pump making the noise. Im going to add fluid today and see if the problem/ whining noise subsides for good.

Anybody have similar problems or similar sounds? Any help would be greatly appreciated. And I will continue to search.

My bet would be the accessory belts. They are either bad or too tight.

Mine does when its cold, and it goes away.

Ill worry about it when it doesn't go away, untill then I don't care nore am I worried.

Mine whines when it's cold as well... before it was my PS belt that was too loose, so I tightened it. Now it whines at random times like when I switch gears and step on it, and the car is not fully warmed up. Yeah I know, it's not the same problem, but I just thought I'd share that. lol

Also check the alternator belt. It may be too loose or glazed.

Im going to check all belts tomorrow, it really doesn't sound like a belt but ill double check just to be safe. I added some PS fluid and it seemed to help, it quieted the noise if not took it away completely...

Ill keep you updated.

i have the same problem and i was told it could be the t-belt tensioner and i replaced it today but it still does it and i was also told it could be the accessory belts

Yea I would double check those belts make sure they're tight and in good condition.
