Default ECT and O2 running rich=bad mpg

OK so ronj just metioned that the Engine coolant temp sensor Makes the car run rich while warming up. Ronj If you could would you post what the resistance should be at what temp the coolant is. I have an aftermarket temp sensor hooked up so it wont be any problem to read that. The thing is my car really never reaches above 180degrees. Im pretty sure my new hatch has the thermostat in it, Haven't checked yet. My stock cluster is reading that the car is on hot when my other temp gauge says 180 to 190. Not sure if its the sensor or if the needle needs adjusted? And about the universal o2 sensor in it, Im really not sure how to check it either. But I can tell you my little d15b7 drinks more fuel than it should.

I assume that you have no CELs and that the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor are in excellent shape. If you are not sure, definitely inspect them. Double check that you have a thermostat installed because not having one will increase fuel consumption.

Here's how to test the ECT/TW sensor:

NO CEL. I will check it tomorrow. Like I said I can let the car sit at idle for about 10 mins and the car will not go over 190. so the fan never has to come on. But I do know what the temp is because of the other temp gauge I have. Thanks Ron

No problem. I hope the info helps. There's no reason to get poor mileage from a stock Civic.

I know. The prelude gets better gas milage than this little thing, and its a 2.2 Im thinking that this car is just a mess that I have to fix like previously stated in my other threads. Ill post some pics of this thing. And some of the after pics when Im dont with the paint job here in a couple of weeks

A few other items to consider would be an exhaust leak in the header near the O2 sensor, ignition timing, valve clearance, high fuel pressure/bad FPR, and stuck open fuel injector(s).

I know there arent any exhaust leaks but I did consider that, because it would make it read lean dumpin more fuel in. Like I said I advanced the dizzy all the way and it def helped a lot with the mpg and power. Another thing could be the Fuel pressure. It has the stock FPR on it and Im not sure if it has a walbro in it or not

Where is the ignition timing currently set? Did you jump the service connector when you adjusted the timing? Are you unable to set it to spec (pointer aligned to red mark on crank pulley)?

Im really not sure. I haven't put the timing light on it. If I put the dizzy in the stock position. Im sure It will run sluggish again.

This may be very important. Put the timing light on it. The timing belt may have skipped a tooth or was installed a tooth off.

I dont know about a tooth off. It doesnt act like it at all. It runs really well. just uses gas.

At least put a timing light on the crank pulley. Your engine should be fuel efficient and purr when the ignition timing is set to spec. It's somewhat possible that you could partially compensate for one tooth off on the timing belt by turning the distributor to an extreme position.
