Default Just picked up my first beater crv, overheated now trying to figure out damage.

98 crv awd auto 144k miles. Got it for 600.00. Guy that sold it to me said it overheated severely. Starts right up, drives and shifts. Only drove it in the parking lot 50 feet or so. Upper rad hose burst, oil stinks but no coolant in oil. Check engine light is on, but not sure what code is. Just got it a hour ago and would like any input or path in the right direction. At this point im gonna replace the hose fill her up and let er eat and see if it gets hot. Thanks in advance i will post pics soon.

I would take the head off and check for any damage to the head, or if it needs to be resurfaced, replace the head gasket and check the cylinder walls for damage.

Also check to see why it overheated in the first place. Broken radiator, hose leak, bad thermo, bad fan switch, bad fan, etc.

P.S Good pick up, nice price that is a steal!

At the very lease, get it pressure tested (you may find a dye kit a worthwhile product).

Can't tell you what's wrong, cracked head, warped block, torn gasket, clogged passage, rusted channels...you never know until you take a good look. But for 600 bucks, throw in a new motor and call it a beater.

pulled the thermo and put a fresh upper hose on it, filled with water and ran. noticed it smoking under the exhaust mani and figured it was just water i splashed. turned it off and noticed a puddle and stream coming out from under the mani. im thinkin the head gasket is toast. also it wouldnt start after the water was in and ran. guess it doesnt like compressing water.

time for a motor, somebody please post a link on a jdm replacement how to. please

you jump two wires at the ecu and it tricks it into thinking
it has a crank angle sensor and it wont throw CEL. write up around
here some place... look in the civic pages all the same ****.

If it needs a knock use it off the blown motor.
