Default Using P28 instead of P08 for D15B JDM VTEC

Has anyone had any trouble using the P28 ECU instead of the P08 for the D15B JDM VTEC head?

The reason I ask is, I found a P28 for around $100 when every P08 that I find is $200+.

I had a stock D15B7 and I'm doing a mini-me swap

I've got:

D15B JDM 1.5 HEAD
D16Y8 HEAD GASKET
D16Z6 TIMING BELT/WATER PUMP

I've read all the mini-me write-ups. Any suggestions?

the problem with the p28 is it is for a d16z6 which has a single stage vtec

and jdm d15b vtec has 2 stage vtec.

you really should use the ecu that goes with the d15b

i dont know if you can get the p28 chipped to run with the d15b head or not, but after chipping and programming it will probably cost the same

Thanks for the info man. I will take your advice. Who would wanna lose out on that? That would be crazy.

Do you know if the wiring plug is different from my stock P06 to the VTEC P08?

This is my first Civic swap. I can't wait to feel that VTEC kick in and those cams start working.

Urg, There are 3 different JDM D15B Vtec engines:
-OBD1 JDM D15B Vtec -> similar, but not identical to the USDM D16Z6, it does however use an identical head, cam is supposed to be slightly more aggressive, bottom end is a hodge podge of D-series parts plus some unique stuff. Uses a P08 ECU which looks for a single wire unheated O2 sensor

-OBD1 JDM D15B Vtec-e -> Identical to the USDM D15Z1, uses a P84 ECU (more or less identical to the USDM P07.)

-OBD2 3 Stage D15B Vtec -> Unique to itself, uses a P2J ECU (these are difficult to find, especially from a manual, most of these engines were mated to a CVT tranny) The way these engines function is as follows:
-engine operates in 12 valve vtec-e mode (stage 1)
-engine operates in 16 valve non-vtec mode (stage 2)
-engine operates in normal SOHC vtec mode (stage 3)

plug and pinout is the same, wires for vtec will need to be added.

You wont be feeling anything, vtec isn't a turbo, you're lucky if you can even here it on a SOHC. Even a DOHC you shouldn't feel it "kick" it should be a smooth crossover.

To answer the original question, neither ECU is technically correct for the engine you have, that said neither the P08 or P28 are that different and both will work, ideally though whatever you run should be tuned on a dyno.

1. Get P28 ECU
2. Chip P28 ECU with P08 program
3. Save $100

Awesome. So I'm a little confused.

I know mine is the earlier OBD1, it has the OEM black valve cover.

Does it have the 2 stage VTEC?

If you are inside your engine already you might as well change it. Its one of the most important preventative things you can do.

Water pump goes bad = Kiss your new setup goodbye. Usually by the time you find out, its too late.

if ur motor is obd1 u will know by the dizzy square gray plugs and says vtec honda on the valve cover its a single stage vtec motor running a po8 is not important the only differance is a p28 runs off a 4 wire o2 sensor and a p08 runs off a 1 wire u must run the right o2 for ur ecu, and u need to run the vtec wires also . ive done this swap many times and run a virgin p28 every time with no codes if ur putting it in a obd0 car u have to rewire the dizzy and ecu harness or get jumpers let me know if u have any questions....

Explain HOW your VTEC is working properly without a P2J ECU when no one else has been able to get it to work correctly.
