Default 96 Hatch Climate control button functions reversed...

The climate control button functions are reversed in my hatch. Dash is stock, no conversion or anything like that. Previous owner says he even tried replacing the climate control with no luck. Anyone else ever run into this problem? Like the defrost button gives me full upper vent, etc. Everything is reversed.

sorry to bring up an old thread, but I'd like an answer to this as well. I've tried 5 different known good climate controls and they all do the same thing in my car. The defrost setting blows out the center vent and the center vent and center vent/feet blow out the defrost although the center vent/feet blows out the feet and defrost. What's going on????

i ran into the same issue with my 96 coupe. i brainstormed for a while trying to think what i had done to cause it...

my theory (untested, but maybe i'll have a chance today..) is that i had one position selected when i disconnected the battery. then inadvertantly hit another button while the battery was out. when the battery was reconnected, the wrong button was pushed for the position of the dampers.

now the sequence is off so when you push the button labelled [defrost],
it "hears" [top vents].

i think the fix is to get the dampers in a known position, disconnect the battery, hit the button for the position the dampers are in, then reconnect the battery. this would explain why swapping in control set after control set hasn't fixed the problem.

This idea is worth a try, but I would expect Honda engineers to design a system that would prevent this type of synchrony loss. My guess is a bad mode control motor or broken mode control linkage.

i would think so too, but then again maybe it was cheaper/more reliable/easier to manufacture to design a system that would be able to loose synchrony.

the flow chart you show works for a failed or inopperative position, but for my specific case (and maybe some of the other guys posting) all positions function, they're just reversed or offset.

linkage is a good thought.. maybe a cam plate slipped on it's shaft...?

i'll be sure to put my theory to the test this afternoon as well as read up some more on the circuitry.

The same ***king thing happened car quite a while ago.

It occurred when the battery was nearly dead and I pressed one of the climate control buttons. Now, the button all the way on the left does what the one all the way on the right is supposed to do; and vice versa. By the way I have installed a NEW climate control AND a new mode control motor with NO change. The climate control and mode control motor seems to operate as they should but the controls are still reversed.

I believe the flaps in the blower unit are out of position (or out of sync), but I never felt like removing the dash to try and fix it. Please keep us posted because it is a constant annoyance that I would love to fix (hopefully with minimum effort).

I would think that the electrical tests detailed in the diagrams have the potential to reveal nearly any type of abnormality in the mode control system.

Just curious, did you find a fix for this problem?

You can fix it by removing the cam lever that controls the functions under the dash and playing with the buttons to reset where its supposed to be. I fixed this problem about 3 months ago now.

The last poster is absolutely correct...I had this issue since I bought the car 9 years ago, still own it and dealt with this idiotic problem. to further add some detail to the last post: you must get into a very awkward position and get your head under the dashboard on the drivers side, bring a flash light, an 8mm open end wrench, a screw driver (flat blade medium) a 1/4" drive ratchet w/an mm deep socket and it wouldn't hurt to bring a telescoping magnet. Now,

1: start the car and push the defrost button and when the air is blowing in your face, shut the car, do not press any other buttons.
2. remove the rod from the actuator by spring the plastic retainer to allow the rod to slide out exposing the 8mm nut
3. remove the 8mm nut with the wrench or socket, use the magnet now to suck off the 2 washers then using the screwdriver, pry off the arm that pushes the rod you removed from the splined shaft,
4. replace the arm on the splined shaft facing the 5 o'clock position exactly
5 carefully place the flat washer, then lock washer then nut while holding it in position, use the 8mm wrench to snug it down into the splines, tighten now with the ratchet tighten it down
6. put the rod back into position on the actuator arm and rotate retainer till it clips on the rod

That's it folks, you will be happy to see that the air comes from where it supposed too.

Good Luck!
