smell like gas in interior
hey guys, need some help here. I thought maybe i was the only one but recently others have brought it to my attention that the inside of my car smells like gas. It gets even worse when i turn the a/c or heater on. The only mods i have is a short ram intake (that sounds like a pos btw).
People say it could be the short ram sucking in fumes from the engine bay ( which i doubt ) and thus creating that smell. Other's say that i could possibly have a leaky fuel pump, or fuel lines in the engine bay. If somebody could show me which fuel lines in the engine bay to check, that'd be superb! Could the evap canister and/or the lines to it need replacing? How hard would this be? PS: how would i even go about checkin the fuel pump to see if it leaks? the car doesn't have a hard time starting or anything like that. Also i should mention, that my gas guage in the cluster likes to fluctuate alot, while turning etc. one minute it'll be at half tank, and the next it'll be at almost a quarter, then gradually work itself back to half. Is there some time of float in the tank that moves around ?

These are a few places that can leak and cause a strong odre. I would check the fuel filter, both the hardline and rubber line. Next I would check the connection to the fuel rail. After that would the upper rubber o-rings to the fuel injectors. Then the lower o-rings for the fuel injectors. Then move on to the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel return line. If all those things are good, then the leak is not from the engine bay. I had this gasket go bad before. The fuel pump assembly gasket that is a big round gasket that seals the tank.

part number 17. I dont know the submodle of your civic so check to make sure it is the right gasket before you order.

but yes. he has a point. a few of my friends car smelled like gasoline. after checking all gas lines and o-rings, we checked the gask tank seal and it was bad.
replaced it and it has not smelled like gas ever since.
and to your question about if there is a floater in the gas tank, the answer is yes.

Thanks guys. So far i can rule out stupid this like the short ram intake, and exhaust leak, my car is stock besides that intake, and i would think that the car would be louder than normal. Ill check the fuel filter ( anybody know where it is ? ) and move onto the evap canister. Ill post back with what i find.
well let me help you out

if you are going to remove the fuel lines, make sure that you releave all pressure by opening up the gas cap(where you put gas in) BEFORE you remove the lines or else gas WILL spray everywhere
you do not know where the fuel filter is at?

what would be a good way to check all of this? If you can't see or feel the wetness from gas then how? i have a problem similar to that i start my 94 hb and drive for a bit at 70 the car is fine, then at 55 the heater smells like gas/ there isn't a exhaust leak and all the items above are good. no wetness, What could it be?
