Default Need some advice from the drag pros!

Just started going to the track here recently, (3 times totoal, 4 runs each time) and it's a lot of fun and very addictive! I have been getting better, but I have some questions for you guys who have been doing this for a while. I've gotton a few different answers for the questions I have, so I guess I'm looking for further clarification on a few things. I'm using 205-50-15 BFG drag radials, should I hit the water box then do a burnout, or should I skip the water box and just burn out? Light burnout or heavy? I'm at 21 PSI in the tires right now, should I go lower, or higher, or am I just going to need to play with it? When launching, is it better to go WOT at the expense of traction to build boost for 2nd gear, or should I feather the clutch/gas for more traction even though I may not be able to go WOT? I hear some people say to hit the rev limiter in 1st to help it hook before going into the next gear, but that doesn't seem right to me and I've been shifting right before redline. Am I doing the right thing? Do you guys lift to shift, power shift, or partially lift? Any advice you guys can give would be great. It seems like every time I go to the track, I can't get more than 4 runs in, so if I can avoid trying things that don't really work so I don't waste one of the 4 runs I get a week (maybe) would be helpful.

My best 60 foot so far has been 2.3
Best ET has been a 13.2 @ 112
My highest MPH has been 116mph going 13.5 ET.

i roll through the burnout box and i do a 2nd gear burnout 2-3 sec max first sign of smoke roll out of it.

Drag radials are different to users. find the right pressure that you and your car both like.

launching you want to preload. Get your Launch RPMS up where u like them and let the clutch out til you feel the car wanting to move and use the ebrake to hold your self but keep the same load on the clutch. light goes green ease out of clutch and pray nothing breaks

Shifting.. I use to lift to shift.. now i just full throttle shift takes a few times to get use to it but times did get better. gained about 3 tenths and 4 mph

Leave on the last yellow, if you see the green light your going to get beat.

You can buy slicks when your ready. You may want to think about spare axles too at that point.

There are all kinds of stories about axle life. If you don't buy spares and drive to the track, at least buy a AAA membership. They will tow you 100 miles for free, 4 time a year. Yes they will tow you from the track.

I will be getting some slicks, but I want to see what the best I can do on Drag radials is. I will probably get another set of axles just in case and keep them with the rest of my my "honda repair kit". Do you guys hit the limiter in first or do you shift at redline? What's a good good 60ft time to shoot for on DRs? Once I can hit that goal, I'll move up to slicks.

Are you using a 2 step? Hitting the rev limiter in first depends on your traction. If you're spinning your tires in first gear you need to hit the limiter or when you get into second the car will bog down

When you take off and you hear the tires chirping, should you get into it more, or should you wait till you get full traction before you go WOT?

In first gear thats all you want to hear is them chirping... At that point you want to ease into it and power shift into second... If your running anything other than a LS transmission your car will spin in 2nd as well... It will be alot easier to control so try to chirp them thru 2nd... Power shift into 3rd and go WOT and hold on...

As a general rule most guys here hit the limiter 3 times. This gets you out past the 60' and also makes sure that you are high enough in your RPM band going into 2nd. I've always preloaded at the line, then dump on launch. I run 9psi in my M&H dr's, and over 5 years have only broken 2 axels. Both times it was the passenger side. Full throttle shift, it keeps you in boost. Do a water box burn out. Let the tires drag you out. If you roll out before hand, your tires are not hot enough. Trust me on that last one, it is the difference between a 2.3 and 1.8 60'.

Personally, I think you’re running the BFG’s pressures a little too high, when I ran them it was never above 15psi (Track dependant).
You should be able to average 2.0 60fts on BFG’s off the throttle with out 2 step etc, it’s difficult to nail consistent sub 2.0 60’s on the BFG.
With 2 step and the right pressures and if it all comes together I don’t see why you couldn’t average 1.9 60’s.
If you want to continue with DR I would strongly recommend MT’s, they are night and day over the BFG’s, when you’ve run both you will understand.
Equally, MH DR are insane, I used them for a short period, trouble is they are a little too tall for my car, if they made a 225/50/15 I would have these.
As for launching, it really is down to driver preference, you can have a generic process for both pre-launch and staging etc but I’m willing to bet every driver will do things differently, it’s what feels comfortable for you and how you execute the process, we all get dressed in the morning but do it in our own special way

Thanks for the info. MT was my first choice, but I got a killer deal on the BFGs and money was low so I figured I'd give them a go. I wanted to go lower with the BFGs but other people at the track told me not to, so I didn't want to be unsafe or anything and put them at 21 psi. I don't think I was launching high enough. I would keep it at 4K and let off quick then stab the throttle. I think I'm gonna try 5K rpms and let off the clutch a little slower while trying to keep the RPMs around 5-5.5K untill the clutch is all the way out, then jam it.

Launching at 4K is not high enough, im sure your car will bog. Try 5.5 and go from there

With my all motor ,I'll be at 15psi bfgs and lunch at 7500 rpms with two step and preload as tree is coming down. Should hit 1.80-1.90s 60fts.

7500 seems kind of high, but I'm a noob. What are the benifits of starting so high, as opposed to starting at 5-6? Seems like it would just spin, or is the goal just to stay in it untill it finaly grabs and you take off (hitting the limiter a few times)?
