Tiny cracks in flywheel OK?
I'm gonna use my old flywheel with a motor swap I'm doing, but when I took it off there were tiny hairline cracks on the surface. I could barely feel them there. If I get it resurfaced, will it take care of the cracks? Is this normal? The flywheel/clutch assembly also had red dust all over it. Just need to know if it is okay to use.
i would take it to a welding shop, and have it magnafluxed. its where they use a powerfull magnet, and iron oxide dusting. the magnet, magnetizes the entire object, and the iron oxide dust covers everything that is cracked. if there are internal cracks you will find out quick. not sure if getting it resurfaced would work or not the only thing i can tell you, is to try it and see what it looks like afterwards.
If the cracks are on the clutch mating surface, they can cause wear and performance issues just like cracked brake rotors do. Worst-case scenario is if it breaks apart, it could become heavy shrapnel that could go through the bell housing, your hood, your firewall.
I would get a new one or a good used one for peace of mind.

I would never even consider reusing a cracked/damaged flywheel. I dont even use stock flywheels in race applications if they are like new.
I have seen flywheels/clutches come apart and shoot through the floorboard and basicly total the vehicle. Not to mention shrapnel lodged in your leg would suck!

They look like very tiny hairline cracks. Some of them I barely can feel. I ended up buying a new flywheel from Autozone for $60 today, I didn't realize they were this cheap. Thanks for the help.
