Startup is kinda bitch to get right. The idle maps and decelleration are little complicated for the avg joe. But it can be done. Timing is simple like any standalone. Boost mapping is easy as well as using the boost control solonoid feature.
The most problems people see is they are screwing around with the features that dont need to be touched. Thats why alot of people are seeing some issues. If you keep it simple just timing and fuel its not that difficult to tune.

b18turbo,
Did ya ever get it to start up without it having to turn over multiple times?
Kinda sounds like that will always be a problem with AEM, unless you go to
distributer-less ignition?

I will agree with Viren. I've been messing with mine just fine tuning stuff here and there since I can't hit the dyno all the time. Start up suck, but once I got it to idle which was like 20 minutes and adding timing the car started to come alive. This is my first time tuning a car so I wanted to take baby steps and start from a super conservative stand point and move forward. So far everything is going well. I think the thing has about 5% of the **** I will need/use and 95% of **** I know nothing about and never touch. I had some major misfire issue I had to work out about 2-3 weeks so that slowed the progress. I have managed to make 250 whp and 200 ft lbs with 7 lbs. I'm sure with more timing and increase my revs from 7k to 8k I could get more out of it, but it's a learning lesson. I'm the type of person who likes to tinker with stuff and understand it's effect and why it happened or why it didn't happen. Kinda stupid, but it will help in the future when I help others out. Another thing that kicked my *** is I'm not a computer guru so I had issues just getting the progam to load up. But if you have smart computer friends you can work around it. Are you in the market for an AEM?

you get all the latest software from the aem ems forums board, and yes, its free. You can download everything you'd need (except base maps) and play around with the software without buying a thing
As for the ems itself, its a pain in the *** for startup, and the base map for my car at least (using 30-1010) was way too conservative. The thing would be perfect if it came with a WB o2 sensor (I'd pay more for that feature), that's the one thing that it really lacks. Other then that its not too bad. Its more complicated then the hondata, but when you get the hang of it, has many more features then hondata.

turn on "EARLY SYNC" in options...
at most, i crank for two seconds(5-6 cranks), most of the time, it starts in one(three cranks)
you also have to adjust the start fuel, ignition, etc... there are alot oof variables but once you have it right... it's idling better than stock, and with 55lb injectors no less

it is explained in teh aem forum somewhere, and it syncs up the ignition earlier that usual, and your suppose to engage it once you get the engine starting consistently
i guess it's a safety measure, but it does help
