Did the shop use leak detection dye when they charged the system? They should have.

If you pinpointed the leak point as the compressor itself and are certain that nothing else was leaking, then you should be able to get it to hold a charge by replacing the compressor with a good one. However, there are no guarantees when working with air conditioning, especially on an 18+ year old car. The system is only as good as its weakest link. You could very well replace the compressor and charge the system, only for it to spring a leak elsewhere.

It could just be an oring blown or missing on the hose the connects to the compressor. Did you try disconnecting both hoses to check??

'88-91 Civic/CRX A/C compressors are not all interchangeable, but it doesn't have anything to do with trim level. Your car may have either a Sanden or a Matsushita compressor depending on which A/C accessory kit was installed by the selling dealership when the car was new. The two compressors require different lines because the fittings are in different locations. They also take a different belt length, but that's not as big of a deal as the line fitment.

I believe someone has posted pictures in this forum detailing the visual differences between the Matsushita and Sanden compressors to make them easier to identify. You may want to try a search.
