Default question for those w/ experience of LED's. PLEASE HELP!!!

well, i decided to change some of the lights inside my cabin to red led's. i bought some 3 volt 20 ma led's and hooked em up to some 1/2 watt resistors. the led's light up fine but the resistor get very HOT! eventually melting the plastic/electrical tape/wires around the resistor. and i didn't wrap the resistor w/ nething but since the space around it is very confined so i have no choice. i tried searching online and by the automatic calculators, it indicates that i only need 1/4 watt resistors. wouldn't using lower wattage just increase more heat? how bout if i used 1 watt resistors? would this restrict too much current going to the led? btw, the led i have is a 10 candella b4304h91 red led which pretty bright!
