Icon2 D16y8 vs D16z6 swap questions

im thinking of swaping a D16y8 or D16z6 into my 90 sedan but wanted to know is this a direct swap or will i need a doner car also, or just motor?

i dont want to drop alot of moey on the swap or do much modification so thats why i want a D-series instead of a B-series

or is it worth it to swap a B16a2 for 40hp more than th D

any info on this would be greatly appreciated

if you really want to save some money get yourself a zc sohc non-vtec or if you want vtec go with a d15b sohc vtec...them d16y8 engines are notorious for spun bearings and the d16z6 is similar to the d15b vtec but with less hp...!!!

zc sohc-120hp ($475 hmotorsonline.com) jdm engine
d15b vtec-130hp ($550 hmotorsonline.com) jdm engine
d16z6-125hp (usdm engine)
d16y8-127hp (usdm engine)

usdm would have higher mileage unless you rebuilt it while imported jdm engines are low mileage...jdm engines are easy to find and are available anywhere for purchase especially if you live on the west coast

I personally would get an a6, that truly drops right in. You have to switch the dizzy and stuff with the y8. Plus wire for VTEC and all that jazz

i would beg to differ on the mileage deal there buddy. there are tons of low mileage usdm engines available. its just that everyone is so damned set on "jdm this". blah. a z6 is a decent engine, with tons of potential. i personally have a local friend of mine with over 400 whp in from his z6 in his del sol. how's that for reliability? as for spun bearings... well, honestly that can happen to literally ANY engine. ANY!! not just certain engines. search a little bit. there is a thread somewhere in here that is against jdm engines, ones that were locked up, ones that blew up, wouldn't start, ect..... if you are going to give advice, please give good advice, not just what you think, .

If you are looking at the best bang for buck i would say go with a z6 or y8. Its a simple swap which allows you to retain your stock tranny and axles. Outside of swapping over the timing belt mount its a straight drop. The wiring is simple enough to do, or elementary if you buy a conversion harness (rywire, boomslang, etc). Then depending on your power goals after the novelty of the initial swap wears off (it will i know from experience) you can easily see 220 whp with a quality turbo setup and a good tune on a healthy stock motor, which will eat your average b swaps lunch.

this looks fairly simple plug and play option but it does cost $300
