2002 Odyssey Transmission Problem
Hello,
My transmission is starting to slip at 120kmi on our 2002 Odyssey. I changed the transmission fluid twice once at 100k and just now.
I hear a rebuilt transmission at the dealership is $3.5k !!!
Also, my instrument/gauge cluster is lighting up randomly. Any ideas? One local shop said I need a new cluster.
Any recommendations?
Much Appreciated.

it doesnt matter how many times you changed your tranny fluid, the trannys in our odysseys pretty much just suck. it's hit n miss, but many many have this problem.
Honda extended the warranty to 7 years and 100K miles, so you just missed it.
You may find it cheaper to go else where like AAMCO. I have heard other places can do it for as less as $2,700 for a rebuilt trans.
I just traded one minivan (Ford Freestar) because of the potential trans problems before my 09 Ody, so I sort of know how you feel.
We have come to expect "better" from Honda, but in this case, the trans is just like "everyone" else. It's not a comforting thing to hear, 120K miles + new transmssion is "about right." It's just not what we come to expect from Honda.
Trans problem is big on minivans as the word "mini" means nothing because they are so big and heavy, and still use a "car based" transmission.
I have read that 05+ transmissions have done a lot better, and Consumer Report Mag backs it up.
Before our Ody, we did consider Tahoe/Suburban, and I did look into it. The thing about information is this. If you search hard enough, you will find an example. Did they have transmission problems? Yes, you can find one. Or maybe find two on the internet (on late models). Are they common? I have not heard that. They are overbuilt and and tow a boat. So for us to shuttle kids and people around, there should be little stress on the transmission.
You can do your own research, but the tough part will be your interpretation of the information you found.

I just bought a 2003 Odyssey and i made sure the dealership replaced the transmission. Check ebay because you might it cheaper than the dealer with some sort of warranty.

Hello, I was very unhappy with my tranny problems on my 2000 odyssey. If yours truely did just start having problems. Take it too the dealership anyway. I work for a tier one parts supplier for Honda. Most cases if you can show that you have had the fluid changed especially if its at the dealership along with the oil, Honda looks at that as well as if you have been a honda customer before. You have very good chances that they will replace it free. I do all my own maint and because it was my first Honda they only offered 25% price reduction. But I had driven on the bad tranny for several thousand miles. Actually, Our problems started at 109k. We are still driving the same tranny and up to 167k. So i'd say its a lemon tranny but it sure keeps making lemonade long after the problem started.
Honda knows what the problem is and has a fix for it. They SAY that takes care of the problem. The problem was a bad oiler passage in the casting that provided lube for 2nd gear. Has anyone had a rebuilt from the dealership go bad again?

we bought our 2003 Odyssey with about 45K on the clock from a Honda dealer. Supposedly all the maintenance was done as well as the transmission "fix."
After the first oil change (by me) I checked the cabin filter, and of course it was the original, they never changed it becuase there is a plastic piece you have to cut out in order to get the filter out.
We are @ 70K miles now, and due for a tranny flush I think at 75K.
Awesome van, leather, flip down DVD for the kiddies, tons of room, can haul a dirt bike. But the potential tranny problems has me thinking time to trade it in.

Hello,
I called a local dealer and had asked verbally an estimate for a rebuilt transmission and they said $3500. NA Honda asked me to have the dealer diagnose the car to confirm the transmission failure. They also asked if I had my transmission service which I asked if that meant changing the fluid and they said yes. I faxed them receipts of changing the fluid in 6/09 and 7/08.
I did that the dealer quoted me $4495. They also noted that I had flickering random lights on my dash and they faulted my alternator at $595.
I called NA Honda and they came and offered assistance so that I only pay $3150 and get 3 yr/36kmi warranty.
What do you guys think? I am glad to see the discount but this an enormous amount of money.

Loay

It looks like I have a possibility of two options:
1. Remanufactured Trans with a new ECM/ECU/Computer >$3k
2. Rebuilding the trans $1800-$2500
What do you guys think???

My 2000 Odyssey is in the transmission shop now....the tork converter clutches are going out. Total rebuild $2363.79 with one year/12,000 mile warranty. I am just praying that it last at LEAST another 100,000 miles....it has 182,000 on it now.
A friend of ours got their Ody transmission replaced (under the recall warranty) at ~ 100K. It's been going on strong for a few years now. We all hate to spend $$$ on auto repairs, but the fact that yours went up to 182K is not too bad.
Yep, that's what I was thinking....after reading all these threads! I just pray that it will last another 182,000 miles after the rebuild. But damn....2363.79 is a LOT of money....guess I can't take the kiddo to Galvaston for her 5th b-day now...she has been wanting to go to the beach, she's never been
