Default novice inquiry about tranny

I've pinpointed an oil leak on my transmission, where it connects to the motor. Originally thought it was the oil pan, but there was no change in oil level, so I put the car on stands and went over the bottom with a flashlight and found the culprit. I've been told it's the main seal, which kinda makes sense to me, even with little mechanical knowledge. I'm just looking to find out if this is something I should feel I can tackle on my own (with a friend who knows hondas) or if it would be a waste of time and I should just take it to a shop. Obviously I'm interested in the cheapest solution, but don't want to bite off more than I can chew with my inexperience. The transmission has been slipping more and more too, so I'd also like to know if there's a chance it's messed up permanently and if I should just look for a replacement transmission. Running stock D16A6 motor and tranny. If anyone has an extra tranny laying around, keep me in mind, I might try to buy it from you. Thanks in advance.
