take off the manifold and run a long screwdriver or pry bar in there until all the crap is out.

do you have the cat off of the car? is the catalyst sitting so you can see the honeycomb material? if not then you have a problem, but if it is sitting so you can see through then its not clogged.

I also have that motor and will tell you that if you gut the cat the engine will not run properly with out, meaning it will throw a cel.

x2

yeah, two O2 sensors- one upstream from the cat, one downstream. more or less, if the downstream (secondary) doesn't see "cleaner" exhaust within an expected range compared to the upstream (primary) O2 you throw a code and run like garbage!!

since i can't suggest you do anything illeagal... (and i can't stop you either ) i will give you two suggestions that will work.

one, you can replace your manifold with the 99-00 Y8 manifold, along with an EX fitment cat and B-pipe. to my knowledge you can reuse the muffler. not a bad time to pick up an EX fitment catback. and the manifold is worlds better. practically an OE header.

two, and this is to save some dollars... have an exhaust shop weld a universal cat into your current B-pipe and you'll only have to get the Y8 manifold. if you have them leave an extra inch or so on the B-pipe, everything will bolt up more easily.

I don't think it will run like garbage without the catalyst material, but it is illegal to do so.

My D16Y7 has been throwing code 0420 (catalyst efficiency below threshold) for a few months now and it runs fine. Hell, I just got 44 mpg a few weeks ago.

The D16Y7 cat/manifold combo is very expensive. Maybe try something like hondamark35 said and get a custom built (read: cheaper) cat setup.

Correct, not having a cat, or even not having a secondary O2 sensor, will not affect the way the car runs. Thanks for posting your experience, that backs up what I'm about to say...

My buddy had a OBDII LS swap in his 00 EK and he had a gutted cat without a secondary O2 sensor--and it ran perfectly fine without it. The only problem was that the exhaust was pretty damn raspy (gutted cat, straight pipe to CTR muffler). MPG was in the high 20's, and keep in mind he also had a B16 tranny. We talked to several knowledgeable people, and the consensus is that the secondary O2 sensor only checks the exhaust, it doesn't do anything about it afterwards. The primary O2 sensor is what does the work.
