i just changed the timing belt today and after throwing both the head and the crank (yes both, i kno im and idiot) out of timing while switching belts im pretty sure i got them both back to tdc. anyways go to start it up and it runs good, but after about 5 mins of heating up it starts poopin out on me. major loss of power and idles crapy at like 300rpm. i pull over to let it cool down and i can see smoke comming from under the pgmfi cant see exactly where tho. it runs fine when ever i start it up cold but after drivin around for 5 mins and cant make it out of 3rd gear.




would the crank or cam being off a tooth possible cause this? i was thinking i maybe pushed a wire from the pgmfi and its resting against the engine block burning and causing smoke. it honestly feels like something having to do with the fuel delivery system when ur behind the wheel but i dont know. any suggestion on any specific wires i should be looking at.

 

You should be able to check timing with timing light to see if you set it at TDC. Then your suppose to slowly retard/advance timing 12-16 deg BTDC. If it starts to stumble or idle rough back off about 1.5 deg. Dont quote me though. Hope it helps

 

i dont have a timing gun. but im wondering if the timing is what would cause this? just gave it another drive. ran fine for bout 10-15 mins but then lossing power and couldnt get outa 4th gear on freeway. i was thinking that if it was the timing it would be running like crap from when i turn it on to when i turn it off, but i dont kno for sure.

 

i think it might be a leak in the vacum system somewhere. does this sound like the vacum might be causing this?

 

possibly a vacuum leak. Have you tried changing your ignition timing at all? Could be the cam timing too.

 

This sounds VERY important. You'd better locate what's burning before driving the car any more.

 

yea i found the cuase of the smoke. was just sum oil on the exaust. when i was tryin to turn the camshaft over with the bolt on the camshaft timing pully and i loosened it on accident. now i thought i have moved the pully in comparison to the cam but a buddy of mine said nah u cant cause theres a key in the gear.

also is there a trick to cheking for vacum leaks or do i just gotta check all the individual hoses?

 

Double check the mechanical timing of the cam and crank. What engine/year?

 

I agree with Ron I would recheck the timing. Its real easy to move the timing off a hair especially after loosening the tensioner. Also check the rotor on the distributor. I have seen a few cars that have had the set screw fall out and the timing was off because of it.
