I'm getting a slight misfire / ping on my engine... Trying to track down what it is.
I've changed a few things within the passed month:

- New spark plugs
- New Ignition rotor
- Adjusted Ignition timing

My spark plug wires are 9+ years old... as well as my MSD Cap. Need to change these .

I took off the ignition coil lead wire and noticed it was all powdery with white corrosion on it.
I wiped some of the residue off, but there still alot left.
Could this be an underlying problem ? What causes the corrosion ? See pic

 

More than likely that is your problem is the corrosion. Iv gotten a car where the battery terminals are so corroded it wouldn't allow enough power from the battery to turn over the starter...it just clicked...cleaned the terminals off with a wire brush, car started and run just fine.

I would take a wire brush to it to get all of that off there. Your spark does not have a clean contact that's where the misfiring is more than likely coming from. If the corrosion is bad enough the electrcity cannot get through to the spark plug wire.

My CRX had such old plugs in it, they were covered in white corrosion cause a misfire, changed all the plugs, no more misfire. Hope this helps.

Corrosion is cause by air and water mostly happens when it's humid outside or if you live by the ocean and the warm salty air.
