As I was idling the one day I noticed the temperature gauge going up, then as soon as I hit the gas, driving or revving it goes down. I let the car idle for about 20 mins after driving and the fan doesnt come on at all. I have already flushed the radiator and I still have the same problem. I did do a search and saw that it could be the fan switch but my problem seems a little different the others.

 

I had a similar problem with my '95 LS. Turned out that I was a little low on coolant because my radiator had a small leak.
Run the car for a while with the radiator cap off and see if any bubbles come up to the surface. Top it off with coolant while your at it.


I would try to power the fan with 12V to make sure that it works. Then see if your switch is dead. After that (and maybe for good measure) change out your T-stat.

 

it over heats at long stops, when is running is just above the normal temperature. the car is not leaking, we checked if it had a thermostat and it doesnt have it. im not sure if thats the reason why is overheating. wat do you guys think? we are going to flush the radiator. plz help us out azht.

LMAO NOT LAUGHING AT YOU BUT ON SUNDAY I HAD NOTICED THAT I HAD A OVER HEATING PROBLEM .......GUESS WHAT I DIDNT HAVE A THERMOSTAT EITHER DAM WE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ....ON THE SAME WEEK ...WELL WENT TO AUTO ZONE AND BOUGHT A THERMOSTAT FOR ABOUT 12.96 BUY INSTALL IT U WONT HAVE THE PROBLEM ANY MORE ...BY THE WAY MAKE SURE TO GET THE FAN RUNNING ......IIGHT HOPE THIS HELPS TRUST ME WHEN I PUT IT IN THE TEMP RAN NORMAL

 

Well I guess I should check to make sure I have one as well, I noticed some weird things about this car so it wouldn't surprise me. I will check some other things as well and come back with the outcome.

 

if it overheats in traffic and idling and the temp goes down immediately upon revving the engine while still at a stop that may be indicative of a bad water pump. If revving it does nothing at a standstill or makes it worse than it is most likely a fan related issue/air in coolant system/stuck closed t stat etc. I don't really see how not having a thermostat at all would cause overheating, if anything it would cause overcooling in the winter.

This is exactly what happens, example, I was at a light and it got up to almost the H, so I put it park and started revving the engine and it began to go back down. So maybe I should be checking the water pump.

 

If you are changing the water pump you might as well do the timing belt at the same time depending on how old it is.

 

So I finally did the job. Got the water pump, timing belt, seals. Still overheating, changed the thermostat still over heating. Realized there was white smoke and the antifreeze had oil in it, so it looks like it is the headgasket.

 

Your fan just might need to be replaced. While driving past 30mph, air is forced in and cools your motor. Without a fan, the car will heat up if its standing still because theres no fan to cool it

 

Yeah I understand that, but even if I rev the engine without moving the car, the temp gauge will go down.

 

i had teh same problem on my eclipse and was my water pump which damaged my head. dam that car was a nioghtmare.

 

Well the water pump was good, but the thermostat was bad, so I am guessing from driving so long with it bad, which messed up the head gasket.

 

well with what i been reading on your threat its pointing to a blow head gasket cuz the big factor of that is having the coolanting mixing with your oil. that a big sign that head gasket gone.... cuz there alot that can cause your car to over heat but when u got the oil and coolants mixing that most like the head gasket man

 

I found a kit on ebay for $45, luckily my brother-in law knows how to do it, so I dont have to pay to get it put it on

 

OKAY, been doing some reading... check the oil for water, looked okay couldn't tell if there was water in it, looked kind of dark... pulled the spark plug wires on 2, 3, & 4, covered in oil, 1 only had a little bit on it. So am I fVcked????

 

why in the hell would you take a thermostat out and not put a new one or at least the old back in?

I am guessing the oil in the spark plugs was caused by the seals, i think the old ones were put back on because the ones that I had did not fit. So that will be a messy job to clean up.

 

I check the spark plug seals and they look fine, i got them with the water pump/timing belt combo. However, they look cheap, any recommendations for good ones?

 

Put on the OEM seals and took care of that problem. Hopefully I can start the head gasket this weekend. And also try a compression test.

One question though, if my head gasket is blown wouldn't I be smoking all the time, the only time it smoked is right after we changed the thermostat and added water? No smoke since then...

I was told to top off my radiator and start it with the cap off, then rev it up past 5k rpm and see if water shoots out. Not a drop came out when revving it up. Is it possible there is nothing wrong with the head gasket?

If you read the other thread I changed the water pump and thermostat and it is still over heating, the same problem. When I drive it is fine but when I stop it starts to heat and as soon as I touch the gas it goes down.

I am going to try and run it without the thermostat to see if I bought a bad one. Is there anything else I should check? I need your help, please...

Update, I jumped the fan switch so the fans run constantly, the car stays cool for awhile but when I was sitting in traffic today it started to go up again, and as soon as I revved it went back down.

 

Someone mentioned the radiator temp sensor, could this be the problem. Also where exactly is it located. I did check the fuses and they all worked fine.
