Default Weird bogging problem

I have a 91 STD hatch that i bought a few weeks ago.The problem is whenever the car has around 3.5-4 gallons left in the tank it starts acting like its starving for fuel.It usually happens when i come to a complete stop.It will start bucking until i push the clutch in and rev it.I have replaced the fuel filter to no avail.I wouldnt think it would be the fuel pump.Anyone had this problem before?BTW,the engine is out of a 95 but the DPFI was retained.

When you replaced the fuel pump did you get a new sock for it in the tank? Maybe the sock fell off inside the tank and it's not able to pickup the fuel as it's moving forward when you come to a stop?

dephtone,i only replaced the fuel filter.I wasnt sure if it would be the pump since i dont have the problem when the tank is full but i guess its possible.I just hate to start throwing parts at it hoping to get lucky.I may drop the tank and take a look at whats going on in there though.Any other suggestions?

you dont need to drop the tank to get the fuel pump out the fuel pump is in the middle of the back seat just take the seat off and its right there. one of the easiest fuel pumps ive ever had to service.

sorry, but what you're talking about isn't the fuel pump... the thing under the seat is the floating device that indicates the amount of fuel left in the tank.

back to the op, the fuel pump is inside the fuel tank... you would have to drop the tank in order to take it out.

a friend had a similar problem. he replaced the fuel pump, but the filter i came with pointed about 30 degrees upward... so when he had about a quarter of gas left it would bog.

Frank, thanks for the info.I guess if i am going to drop the tank i might as well change the pump.Hopefully i am having the same problem as your friend.I have no plans to go MPFI,would a stock fuel pump be ok or should i upgrade?I only bought this car for gas mileage and not power. My other car is for that.

I'd like to bump this with a fairly similar problem... but in this case the starving problem did not happen until *after* the fuel pump had been installed.

With the first tank after replacing the fuel pump with the strainer filter and the main fuel filter, I first had a problem on a long high speed left hand sweeper---the motor died in the middle of the thing after some rough bucking (scared the hell outta me). When the road straightened, the car, which hadn't come to a stop yet, re-caught and seemed to run normally. The next indication of a problem occurred when making ninety degree turns in town---and right after the highway incident. The car seemed to momentarily die, but catch again almost instantly coming through the turn. Didn't do it everytime. Then, further along, seemed to do it more frequently. By the time I got home it was doing it almost every turn. After some time overnight to think about it, decided it felt just like I was running out of gas. Took it to a station and pumped 7.4 gallons into it----no more problem (11.9gal capacity). The gauge is functioning correctly. The tank is filling fully. But at just about five gallons remaining, it's not getting fuel to the engine. First sign is always the "starving" while sharply turning. We checked all the fittings, condition/status of the filter sock, etc----no apparent issues with any of 'em...

??? any help greatly appreciated :~)
