Default Harsh, late shifting.......

Ok, heres the skinny........ I bought the car used from Carmax in Feb of this year with 72k, as long as I have been driving it I have been having issues, this being the most recent and potentially costly. After slowing down and sometimes stopping, when I start to go the car fels like it downshifts harshly, sometimes even on upshift it feels a little rough. Sometimes it whines, but every vehicle I've owned whined in reverse, but sometimes, and its pretty rare but it whines going forward at slow speeds. Its and auto btw...... Could my trans possibly be going bad? Are these common problems? Could it be repairable? Also I get a repetative clicking/clunking sound in the front of the car when braking, and its most audible below 35 mph, and its speed varies with vehicle speed as well............. any ideas?

Sounds like the transmission might be out of fluid.
