00 Civic Ex Grinding Whinning??
i recently purchased my 2000 Civic EX with a manual tranny, in 1st gear at about and above 2500 rpm it starts to make a grinding whine type of noise, the noise increases progressively as rpm's go up, also does it in 2nd, the noise is less noticeable in 3-5, what is this problem and how can i fix, thanx in advance for the help
Damn cant anyone help, i know this has to be a common problem with the civics, may i add that this noise only happens while in gear and above 2500, in neutral i can rev it all day long and i dont get a whinning noise, also i just recently did my valve adjustment thinking that would be my fix and also switched out the tranny fluid with the new MTF, it helped it but didnt eliminate the problem, could it be a heat shield rattling?
its your input shaft bearing in your transmission.
get a new clutch it. should fix it, sooner better then later tho, its causing excessive vibration that can damage other parts of your transmission.

i dont know about that 1500 for a new one. i know locally i found a used one in good condition for 300. and i know the actual bearing is far less. im just not sure if i want to go through the hassle of taking a trans apart

Yeah man 1500? Where do you live hahaha, a used S40 Tranny goes for 300+/- not 1500, i think i might just get new USED tranny rather than trying to play mechanic lol, thanks for the input guys
Now however, my car does not always grind, sometimes it starts from 1st and sometimes it will not make noise until 2nd gear, what else can it be if its not the input shaft bearing or the throw out bearing? maybe a heat shield, if so what should i look for?
the 96-00 trannys have bad bearings the first one to go is the input then the rear on the same shaft the everything. most none Honda shops will tell you its the throw out but they are wrong. the noise starts most of the time around 80,000 miles or so depending on how you drive. during the early stages it will come and go most of the time its heard in first and second. as time goes on it becomes harder to shift and the you hear the noise in third. then if you wait the main shaft is just floating in the case. if you are just starting to hear the noise i would just rebuild the tranny, new bearings and syncros. i got the kit from auto zone i think it was like $250 and after 3 hours i had a like new tranny (DON'T WAIT LIKE I DID). the price i gave was new from Honda factory about a year ago. the tranny is not that hard to rebuild. i live in the palm spring area and if you need help we can work it out just let me know. while the tranny is out do a clutch kit.
Yeah the one i just picked up also has noise in the tranny....you can tell if it is the ThrowOut bearing if you are in neutral and have the engine running with the clutch depressed and hear a noise this is the time the ToB is spinning on the clutch cover and if it makes noise when you are in neutral and engine running clutch up then it's the input bearing or main bearing of the tranny
i have been there and done that. i have 290,000 on the tranny and i did a rebuild on it around 200,000 after all the bearings went bad. it was not fun to rebuild but now its good as new. i just wish some dumb a$$ did not hit me
