Default Ground Wire Question.

Does it have to be the same gauge as the power wire?

I have 4 gauge power right now and I have a spare 8 gauge that I want to use for ground.

Are there any benefits or not of using the same gauge wire.

My 4 gauge is not too long for me to cut and use it for grounding.

Thanks!

you can but its best and most people are going to tell you to use the same as your power wire.
how many watts are you runing?
what i would do is call some shops or something, cause i know some will sell you like 1 foot peices of 4 gauge that you can use for ground.

Yes, rule of thumb is same size. The shorter your ground cable is, the better though. And you'll want a clean unpainted surface to ground to.

Yea, i wouldn't settle for less than 4 gauge, your depending on your ground for the flow of electrons, too small of a ground can heat up and eventually melt or catch on fire (depending on how much of the wire you are utilizing per current draw)
