Default ticking and smoking

my motor is a b16a2. its burning like a quart of oil every couple days. Recently, it developed a more defined ticking sound. I also notice it to be running a bit weak compared to my last em1. and it also idles anywhere from 300 - 700ish. I have been told a couple things, either piston rings or valve seals. I have not had a chance to really inspect it at all, since I had been unemployed. so I've Basically been scraping my money to make my payments. But, i did just get hired at Sears. haha so since i'll be making some money again, i want to have a direction to go towards.

I also need a new cat and o2 sensors which is what my CEL is on for if that helps at all.

Any help would be appreciated!

Alright, i'll do that this week. lets assume it turns out good what then?

also, three other notable issues. when i turn my lights on, it idles lower, and ticking gets louder. I also just had my alternator belt squeal, so i'll tighten it tonight when i get home. i also notice when my A/C is on, i loose a lot of power. But, that may be a whole other situation and the A/C is not a huge concern at the moment, since i live in wisconsin and its not terribly hot

It's likely the valve seals if the compression is good.

Yes, lights on - bigger draw on alternator, slows engine, drops rpm. Ticking is probably lost motion assemblies (LMAS), they are notorious for being ****. Alternator belt squeal? Put a LITTLE dab of dyelectric grease on your finger and just put it on the belt, it will distribute itself along the whole length when you fire it up next. A/c systems generally take a lot of power away from any engine. You have a 1.6L, the a/c will make a big dent in your power.

Yeah, the only reason i question it, is because my last em1 held its own quite well against the A/C and i really didn't notice a big loss in power. Like i said, i rarely use it right now so i don't know if it gets better, or maybe i just got used to using it before that i didn't notice the loss as much. so that problem is fine.

For the lights being on, they are HID's and also fog lights, so i'm guessing thats why im drawing extra power. Get a new alternator? and i'll check up on lost motion assemblies. Thanks!

Another point, when i idle i don't really smoke, but it smells like gas/oil mixture. The higher in RPM's i go, the more smoke i produce.
