I have 2 engine and i want to build one up and boost it which engine will be better to boost.. I have a 94 jdm h22a and a 98 usdm h22

 

stock for stock i would trust the jdm one more probably has less miles and i think out of the two it has a closed deck

 

I say use the closed deck one and sleeve it up. Get some forged pistons and ..... ppppppssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Have fun!

 

so probably the jdm h22a would be better?? i have it in my 94 accord now.. and i have the 1998 usdm h22 in my shop. so im going to take the jdm out and put in the usdm just to get me around and build up the jdm h22

a body shop but i do all of my work with my cars there

 

open deck > closed deck. better cooling to the top of the piston holes, where most of the heat is.

 

thats weird because all the high hosepower motors that have been resleeved run a closed deck sleeve design

 

when sleeving an engine it doesn't matter if its open or closed deck. both can make enough power and handle the same amount of boost. only difference being that the top of the cylinder walls will have more contact with the coolant and therefor have better cooling. Honda changed over to the open deck in the later years for better cooling on the cylinder walls. Im not trying to start an argument of which engine can make more power just stating a positive point to an open deck. another good point to the open deck is that when sleeving the block the open deck has thicker cylinder walls than the closed deck.

the supposed value of a closed deck is to stop a sleeve from rocking which destroys head gasket seal. Any sleeve installed properly is strong enough to withstand the rocking whether it is open or closed deck or supported against an aluminum block. as for non sleeved blocks it might be a benefit to have the closed deck but i don't know, i personally would not run any amount of boost on and H engine without it being sleeved and forged pistons.

I beleive the 98 USDM motor has larger bearing. Or was that in 99 that they started using larger bearings?

 

pre-96 all had 50mm mains. 97 and later engines came with either 50mm or 55mm main, i dont think the year determined which had 50 or 55, i think it was just random, not positive on that part so don't quote me.

I never understood why everyone on honda-tech questions about things that aren't relevant to the thread, im just giving the thread starter what he asked for, but since you asked... its in my 88crx, benson sleeved, 10psi boosted daily driver.
