At the least I would buy a name brand muffler. I don't suggest no cat or a test pipe though.

you at least want to run a high flow cat.
no cat hurts performance.
test pipe will get you the best performance, but it'll probably be loud as heck.
high flow cat will fall short of the test pipe, but at least it's there and it won't be as loud. my suggestion is a catback with a high flow cat.

Yes straight pipe reduces your back pressure. You WILL notice a power loss. Also it will be loud as ****

i recommend custom exhaust tubing and either an itr muffler or mugen. i just recently dropped my itr muffler (sounded okay, apparently restrictive though) for my new mugen twinloop. the mugen is damn awesome!

EDIT: HPPPPRAAAAAAAAAAAAAY DRUNKENS!

Do you have anything to back up this claim? Any dyno graphs showing a loss in power when switching to a "straight pipe"? BTW, what are we comparing a "straight pipe" to?

The backpressure myth is a joke. The whole point of an exhaust system is to clear the chamber and bring in a fresh mixture, not choke your motor...correct exhaust diameter is what you need to look at, not backpressure.

I also very much enjoyed my twin loop, previously I had 2.25 with a "hi flow cat", with my new setup I will have 2.5 with a test pipe and my twin loop.

this is the correct answer. it's all about flow. team integra has a pretty good write up on pipe size and the effect on power. if anyone has doubts about this back pressure garbage. think it thought. combustion takes place, exhaust valve opens and the burned cycle is pushed out. if you did create "backpressure" the piston would have to push it out thus loosing HP. what you ideally want is the exhaust being pulled out of the cylinder in a scavanging effect. think about headers and why some make more power than others. it's all about the pull.

I agree 100%, I was just seeing if sp00ledbseries had any evidence of his claim. I have said it before and I will say it again, for the most part, the header (ideally one tailored to your engine, not a generic one) will determine where your powerband is and will provide the necessary amount of backpressure; everything past the header is just restriction.

When I had my hatch and went from a Z1 to a Z6 I was running the Z1 manifold for a couple of weeks. I bought a header did away with the header/cat and noticed a power loss. My buddy's coupe we noticed the same thing. From my experience if you have a stock motor you will notice a power loss

Do you have any dyno charts to support this claim or was this tested on the scientific butt dyno?

What car and what is it use for? Go with ITR or CTR for it's own only if running a stock motor.

i very much agree. i mean if anything, the straight pipe would clear the burned cycle out more efficently... common sense..
