Default OBD2 to OBD1 and smog?

I've been wanting to convert my 97 CL 2.2 to OBD1 lately (turbo reason), but I am scared if I do it, it won't pass smog due to the conversion and being in California (checking the OBD2 port when smogging).

I would take off the turbo everytime I smog it, but I'm concerend about the OBD2 to OBD1 conversion getting of the way of me passing. Anyone know if they still check the OBD2 port and if I would be able to pass smog in CA with OBD1 in an OBD2 car?

I live in Washington but I have similar problems here. I have an '00 GSR Turbo which is running an OBD I ecu. For emissions I just have to put in the stock injectors, the stock map sensor, and the stock ECU, and drive carefully to the testing facility. As long as I am not throwing an codes I should pass. From my understanding if you go in running an OBD I ecu in an OBD II car, there will be an error when they try and plug into the OBD II port. In Washington I am pretty sure that you get a visual inspection if that happens, I dont know about Cali. Hopefully someone who has dealt with this in Cali will chime in.

I know in CA they do a visual inspection all the time no matter what so I'll have to take off the turbo everytime which isn't that bad, but a little hassle.

I guess that is my answer, swap everything back when smogging. That sux.

If you're going to swap it back to stock for visual, it's not hard at all to unplug the ecu and plug in the stock ecu at the same time (about 1 minute).

I'll have to swap back injectors, too. Yeah, I guess it wouldn't be that difficult, but still a little pain.

How often do you guys have to smog?

@carrnut21:

Do they throw a fuss about OBD1 in OBD2? I was thinking of doing the conversion shortly (not going turbo, but thinking IM and cams w/ a tune sometime this summer).

I am preparing to go to emissions for the first time in a few weeks, I am still getting my car put back together. I know if your car is OBD II and you are running an OBD I ECU that there will be an error when they try and plug into your OBD II port. I have heard that if this happens you will get a visual inspection. In some places they will just put you on the rollers, which is bad for me because I am running without a cat, and am using the non-fouler trick to trick my second O2 sensor, so I would completely fail a sniff test.

Since you are planing on doing simple NA mods your car should run fine with the stock OBD II ECU and as long as you keep your cat you shouldn't have any problems passing every other year. What county do you live in?

I'm in the same spot -Wondering how a JRSC/s300 will do for emissions tests. I know I could probably pull the injectors/sc belt and throw the stock ecu back in, but don't you have to have drive around with the ecu in for a while before the ecu will pass? Another option would be to break my obdII port and see if they'll bust out the wand... My cat is still on, so I could probably get away without having to change anything... Right?

Meh, you get two tries I think, just take it in as is and see what happens. IMHO if you pass the sniffer you should be able to drive it, but I doubt the state agrees with that theory.

In cali, new cars are excempt from smog for 4 years. After that, a smog certificate is required every 2 years to register the vehicle. Unless you're labeled a gross polluter, than I believe you must pass smog every year.
