how deep is the groove? the seal could have worn a grove in the metal so deep it could leak, mine has one also. if you can just feel it with your finger nail it should be ok, but if its huge it will most likely leak

yea i would have to agree also not to bad.
run some emory cloth on it most of the time it will clean very easy. its a oil build up from the seal and oil and may seem to be grooved but it's not.

The picture is very fuzzy but that groove is normal an quite small at that. A 3M green pad in your hand will polish that out enough that it won't leak. looking at the journals is one way to judge it's overall condition but v blocks a precision surface block and a good dial indicator are the only way to check for warpage. Rod and main journal size are checked with a Micrometer or good caliper. If you don't have anything but a dial indicator and stand you can still get an excellent idea of the cranks condition by installing new standard bearings in a good block and plastigauge the rod and main journals against the manuf. specs. use the dial(or feeler gauge) to check end play, if the specs are way out and you plan on making big power with the crank dispose of it and get a new one.

Mine had a little groove just like that but when I got mine micro polished, they groove was buffed out. Just make sure after that the clearances are good
