Default 89" civic rough idle

Update ON BOTTOM!!!!!! OK, I have a 89 civic dx, with a 99 ex motor swap, one of my buddies helped me do it, well he did most of it, but NE ways, I have a check engine light on and I dont know how to check it, I cant find my obd1 connector anywhere around the ecu and dont know if it even is obd1 still or 2. It stopped running one day, and so I replaced the alternator and it worked fine for 1 day, i drove it 250 miles and then it wouldnt get any spark, so I replaced the whole distributor, then it started running but now it is hard to start in the morning and runs really rough for a few and then gets a lil better but not that much. and the check engine light comes on. I tried adjusting the distributor, but no position works, its turned all the way to one side, which is where it runs best. so any help would be appreciated. thanks.

What ECU are you using? You dont have an OBD port to check from. Did you check each plug and make sure you have spark, then check your spark plugs and they look good? A big thing on these cars is the main relay and its easy to change but a hassle to deal with. Sounds like you need to get a timing light on the car and ensure you are somewhere around correct you might be off a tooth or something or just really not good.
A big question is if you converted it to OBD1 or if you swapped over all the sensors and left it similar to stock?

I belive it was already set up for obd1. I checked the spark plugs and wires and do get spark. I just changed the plugs, the person that sold them to me gaped them for me, but ive never gapped them before, so I dont know if that would do anything. I belive the ecu is out of the 99 ex, but not 100%sure. I was thinking i needed a new timing belt, but wasnt sure if that was all that was wrong with it. also if it is obd2 I cant find the scann tool connector under the driver side, so I dont know where it would be, if there is 1.

always buy NGK plugs anyways pregaped and work well. Well there should be a little connector by the passenger side or driver side sorry I cant remember, I believe that when you jumper together if you have it converted then it would have the check engine light blink. Get the ECU numbers off of it and look it up and see what it is. A good way to see if it is OBD1 or not is to look at the O2 sensor is it 1 wire or 4?
Sorry I forgot to ask something very important, so after the swap has it ever run?

yes, its has ran for about a year after the swap, really well. also , not sure if i have an o2 sensor, it should be on the exhaust manifold right? well its not. also, i always buy ngk, but for some reason the person at the counter said these needed to be gapped? but after I changed them it ran the same anyways.

Ok well the problem with these things usually is the last thing you did, you have to have an O2 but it will be at the end of the header near the cat or just past where at 4 meet. Well if it ran good with no cels then u minlght want to try the main relay if you haven't changed it before.

Ok, I replaced the sparkplugs again with NGK, replaced the main relay with a good one, from an identical car, I had a sensor that came dissconnected( the CEL went off and ran better but not best), And today i replaced the coil with a brand new one, and it still is missing. Its Idles good for a few sec., then sputters and then back up, I returned the coil and got new cap and rotor buton, and it still runs the same, except now I dont have to turn my distributor all the way forward for it not to die. I was told that if I change my ignitor it will fix it but its kind of expensive, so I wanted to make sure there were no other things that might be causing it. I tried to smog it and they said it was missing and running too rich. so any suggestions?
