cam to crank syncronization
i put a cam gear on this week and i wasn't paying attention and turned the crank a little before i got it back together.
my question is: when the cam is sitting in the correct position and you spin the crank to TDC, if you put a long screwdriver in the spark plug hole, the pistion rises seems to pause for about 10 or 15 degreeof crank spin before it begins to decend into the block again. so is TDC just as the pistion stops or right before it starts to decend? and by the way there is no mark on the crank pully.
i'm pulling my hair out trying to get this back right

isn't there a notch on the crank pulley and 3 markings (lines) on the timing belt cover? The notch should be lined up with the 3rd mark (if I remember right) and that should be TDC.
On b series motors, if you remove the crank pully there's a tdc grove cut right into the actual timming belt lower gear. So we can just take the pully off and line that mark up to the marker on the plastic cover. If you have a stock pully there should really be one on it though.
If it's a D series motor, the crank has a key way cut in it. The keyway should be "straight up" when the motor is at TDC. A screw driver will tell you when you are TDC in the number one hole. That will get you very close. Take another good look at the crank pulley. On the inside (closest to the block when on the motor) there has to be 3 nothces. These notches are near the key way in the pulley. Mine were very faint and took lots of time and cleaning to find.
yes go back to the crank pulley ....
take the big pulley off.... when u look at the crank little gear theres a little grove.. very little....... that aligns to a arrow on the block..... the crank little metal thingy forgot the name, should be looking almost straight up...... and theres going to be a grovy on the little gear that holds the Tbelt......
if u have an aftermarket pulley and it doesnt have the markings, i recomend to install the old cam gear.. aligng all the ****, take it off and install the new one ......
but look good on the crank bc that little grove its hard to find and as a matter of fact, i got one of those crank gears on my hand. and its on the tooth to the right next to the top one that has the nipple.......

There are four notches on the edge Crank pulley.... 3 are grouped and the last is about an inch away to the right of that group (4 total). Which notch do we line up with the pointer on the lower timing belt cover? The Chilton manual says use the single "lone" mark in one pic and in another pic.... theyh are using the "center" notch in the group if three. This sux man
Which one do we use now that we established they exist.

If you try the screw driver, ect... down the #1 cylinder. You have to make sure your on the right stroke. Usually means pulling the valve cover off, and watching the intake valves....
