Default Where to start: Turbo D series build

I have a 1990 civic dx hatch with a stock motor. I was wondering if you guys could let me know where to start. I'd like to build something that would put down at least 350-400 hp at the wheels with the original motor. j/w if you guys could recommend a turbo kit and what parts to throw on the bottom end and head. any input would be helpful-but no jackass remarks. i am a noobie, and my little dx will one day be woopin on mustangs and vettes and maybe even your all motor type r. more specifically, i'd like to know what ecu i would need to be using-i'm guessing i need rywire obd0-obd1 and a non-vtec obd1 5 speed ecu, right?

thanks in advance

a stock dx d series cannot handle 150hp nevermind 350-400.

you will have to start by buying a motor with a larger displacement and building the internals to support boost.
start with a 1.8l LS or 2l B20

you can build a 1.6l to support 350-450hp but its easier to start with a higher displacement.

and you don't need more than 250whp to beat factory spec mustangs and standard vettes.....and to beat an all motor type r you dont need more than 160whp

i didn't say stock. i meant i want to build the motor-just wanna know with what parts and how. hmmm.....i guess never say never when it comes to power. don't you think 350 at least doable-especially if the bottom end is built?

if you build a small disp d series motor to handle 350whp you will need a large turbo, and your car will feel like a stock d series 100hp motor until about 5500rpm when the little motor has enough breath to spin the turbo. a vette or mustang will be at half track before you can spool the turbo, forget about hard launches because your motor will fall on its face and bog out.

if you start with biggar displacement you will need less boost to reach your goals and it will be must more reliable since you wont be trying to squeeze more than 3 times the stock power out of the motor.

if i was to spend the money to get 350-400whp i would start with a k series at nearly 200+ hp to start with and a small amount of boost, maybe 8-10psi and the car would run for years and years with no worries, and it would have low end power and next to no lag for about the same price, especially if you blow 4 motors before you learn that 400hp is not realistic for a d series

search the turbo forums on honda tech and find people that are making that power and research what motors they used, what size turbo, how much boost etc etc until you find out what route you want to go.

Thanks for the advice. How easily swapped is a b18 or b16 into my 90 hatch? what mounts would i need-and would i need upgrade other **** like the axles (if i'm boosting)?

https://honda-tech.com/search.php?searchid=1462177

read through every thread on that 3 pages of results and if you still have questions then ask

if you want to know how to swap a motor into your car read the FAQ thread at the top of the ef page

https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-crx-ef-civic-1988-1991-3/88-91-crx-ef-civic-frequently-asked-questions-faqs-1508680/

more than 300whp on an ef is pointless on the street, the tires wont be able to hold that power and you will spin through nearly every gear and get beat by a 200whp ef

hey listen know is kinda of an old thread but if want to get 350 400 hp out that d series you CAN!!!! now listen i am just about order every thing for mine, i have zc with a z6 head which is vtech now through the build i may end up takin out vtech by putting and different cam, so here how you must do it, first the bottom end , buy some eagle rods and some wiseco pistons leave the stock crank its good to about 500 hp, the head must be taken apart surface the head, port it IF u want u dont need to but it will be good, get a new web cam new retainers and springs, get the valves reconditioned, then assemble the whole head with new seals, installing the valves can be very tricky have a good shop do it. then u need heads studs from arp,. now the motor will be built to handle about 500 but u wont do it cause u dont need that much! trust me! 400 is plenty!!! after 500 the stock sleeves will start going to ****. so stand under 450 to be safe. now u need about 750 injectors go with the new bosch injectors they are awesome. then ull need a fuel pump like a intank walbro 255 will be perfect. now a fuel regulator and u will be set. now throw in a big intercooler and pump about 18 to 22 psi of boost and race gas. and get it tuned on either hondata or neptune, no crome thats junk. you will **** urself. when u see the numbers. u better trust the tuner....the axles will be fine for some time. and also get it street tuned also on about 10 psi and u will around 280 310 on the streets, which be insane. i am not lie its all about $3200 just for parts but like i say get it IF its worth it you find a way to keep. and youll love it!!!!
