99 Odyssey Tranny- Surprise!!!
Bought my first Honda car from the original owner- a lawyer
and yup!, he screwed me... I now have a great minivan that needs the tranny fixed, at 89k. I have every single receipt for everything he had done, but no tranny recall/replace. I'm a retired Ford service advisor and parts manager, so I know a helluva lot more than the average customer about cars, so I should be able to spot a certain amount of BS at the dealer...... Anyone have any ideas?
I'm in KC. Thx!

A web search using the words "Odyssey Transmission problems" should get you plenty of info. The problem basically is using a "car transmission" on a 4000+lbs minivan.
You are a Ford man. It's the same problem with the Windstar/Freestar using the Taurus transmission.

I have a 02 Odyssey.. Bought it brand new, and at 50k, the tranny failed. I spoke with my local dealer, and they replaced the tranny under the warrenty.. It is very dissapointing that Honda would use such a lite tranny on such a heavy vehicle..
Good luck!

It hasn't failed completely yet; I drained the tranny and put in 4 qts Honda fluid. Seems to have improved slightly; plan is to drain fluid again tomorrow, see how it goes and maybe unload it. Are the newer models (what years?) finally fixed??? I can't believe this is such a cluster...
I wanted a car built by Japanese people who kill themselves if they screw up, not Canadians who just go out for another beer!

I just keep looking at the 2 at the start of the vin....damn...not sure if I want another Honda or not. This is NOT the experience I had hoped for...
Anyone know if REPAIR is better than REPLACE??????
I've scoured the net and every owner I read about is on his 3rd tranny.

That's why people are upset about. Honda replace the transmission with the exact same transmission. There is "No" solution. Since most Odyssey owners expect it to be a Honda, they plan to run it for 200K+ miles, so therefore 3rd transmission.
If it were a Ford Freestar from Canada, owners would start trading it in around 70K, if they are lucky.
Freestar holds no value. Odyssey still does.
It just pisses me off to no end cuz I had Honda MCs back before they even sold many cars, they were perfect, my wife's CRV is perfect, and she encouraged me to get the Ody... I thought it would be "perfect", but it's a craphole... Shouldn't have to spend $7000 for a car only to find out it needs a $5000 tranny.

look im a honda tech in delaware, ive done more then a dozen 99-04 odyssey transes under warrenty, with upwords of 110, thousand miles, ur problem is its a 99 and the odyssey trans is covered for 7 years or 115k, its about 3k for the trans installed, if u call american honda u can prolly get a 50/50 split, good luck
Thanks guys; I swapped another 3 qts out of the tranny today. It seems to be better, not sure if it's cured. I doubt it. Hey Romerosi!, what could set a code in the tranny that would light the Check Engine light? Does the TCM hook to that as well? The way I feel, I just want to get a van that will SURPRISE me by a tranny failure, not one that I expect to fail any second now...
I have a 03 Odessey and last with 130,000 miles on it. Last year my transmission starting giving me problems. I had a company work on that only works on honda's and acura's and has had great reputation for the last 20 years. We ended up replacing the transmission because the cost would have been about the same if I had mine rebuilt. We got the trasmission straight from Honda Factory and shipped, the cost was around $3200. The great thing is that Honda gave me a 3 yr/ 36,000 mile warranty for it. Good thing though, just in the last month my pressure switch came on and the guy at the service department at the dealer said that it was pressure on my transmission so if it should have to be fixed or replaced it will be at no cost to me.
