Default d15z1 performance?

i just accquired this engine today, it was free. i'm actually considering building this thing. i mean, it is vtec, and sohc, and thats what i wanted. now i know it is for economy, but what were to happen if i use a higher compression piston? like any of the other d series pistons. does this engine have any potential if i were to swap heads and use a z6 or y8 head? i did search but all i found were people bitching about compression. i am planning on boost, but only around 10 psi or so, so its not like i have to build the bottom end bullet-proof. any help would be appreciated.

z1 is the oddball, swap in a z6 or y8 head and your compression is low, too low for boost. I would guess the 1.5 block is safer for boost, since less displacement=thicker cylinders. The z1's vtec lift and duration is pretty big, I say boost, and keep it in vtec all day. Not super big, but big enough for performance. Kinda like a y8 cam in vtec, but less if i remember correctly.

If I remember right, the z1's rods are weaker than say, the Z6 or B7 rods.

All the Ds have the same bore, 75mm. The stroke just varies between like 84.5 and 90mm.

If you're concerned with compression, you can mill the head. I would keep the engine stock for fuel economy. Or part it out.

Yeah, in the end just keep it as a econo motor unless you want to have some fun. I'm just excited because I'm doing a build that has some z1 parts included, and since yesterday and today I've seen 2-3 z1 posts so yeah=]. Just supporting builds of z1's for more info=].

to be honest, i'm not really interested in fuel mileage. so all i would have to change in order to have some "fun" is the rods, and pistons. well i was planning on doing that anyway. i just didn't know if the block was any good. but if all i have to change is internals, why not just upgrade to a better internal? sounds easy enough.

Don't waste your time building the D15Z1. The head may be VTEC, but it's VTEC-E. That means that at low RPMs only 1 valve per cylinder opens all the way, and the other only opens a hair. After that the VTEC-E mechanism opens up the other valve fully.

i guess i should have mentioned that i don't have the head, huh? my bad. i am considering a z6, or a y8 head. i think this would help the engine breath and perform a little better, right? i'v been looking for pistons and rods for this block, but not very much is available. as far as interchangeability, what are some options i have?
