Parking/Emergency Brake Won't Hold Car
What's up HT... I got a issue with my parking brake I hope you guys could help me with. I've searched like a true HT veteran and nothing. Like the title says... parking brake won't hold car.
1989 Acura Integra LS.
I tried adjusting the nut under the PB/EB housing and nothing. I even tightened almost as far as it can go and the cables do tighten up like they are supposed do but it doesn't slow the car up one bit. I can literally drive my car with the parking brake up and its as if its not even up. I changed the rear pads to see if it was that and nothing. I need to get this fixed to pass inspection. Do I need to bleed the lines? Would that affect it? Could my calipers be shot? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't think its the cables being stretched because they do tighten.
Help me out guys.

well the parking break is a cable that hooks right up to the calipers it is designed to be able to lock the breaks even if you blew out a break line. So bleeding the breaks won't help you unless your caliper pistons are seized. I would repplace the parking break cables and the springs that are on the calipers first. If that doesnt work get a rebuild kit for your rear calipers and that should do it. Or you can try going to the junk yard and grabing some calipers off of any Integra and swapping them out completely.
You need to take the wheel off and see what is physically happening when you pull the ebrake. Check to make sure that it is even moving the caliper. Also is there any resistance when you pull it or does it just come up really easy?
Thanks for the help guys. Top Speed, there is resistence when I pull on the ebrake.
then it isnt the cable.
so pull off the rotor and have a friend step on the break pedal and watch to see if the piston comes out of the caliper

i'm going to try that this weekend. So basically if the rear brakes are failing it has to be the caliper right? could it be possible that maybe there is air in the lines and not enough fluid is getting down to the piston to create enough pressure to move it?

No. The parking brake has nothing to do with the hydraulic aspect of the rear brakes, its purely cable activated and mutually exclusive.
You are most likely going to have to get a caliper rebuild kit or new calipers all together... an easy way to see if they are failling is to check the wear on the front pads versus the rear... But I would rcomend a rebuild kit it will cost less than new calipers and it isn't hard to do... Or you could just go for upgraded calipers all around if you ever planned on doing aftermarket calipers and rotors now is the best time to do it
