Default WIERD problem, PLEASE help, possible wrong oil filter installed at the dealership

95 Civic LX Automatic 190,000 miles

I just bought the car about a month ago, so this is my first oil change with it. The car runs great, and is in great shape. I had the local Honda dealership change my oil last week, since then, the oil light has come on at idle when its warm and then goes away when you rev up the engine. It doesnt happen all the time though. The oil level is fine and there is no knocks or anything like that. I assumed the oil pressure sender was bad or the sump screen was clogged or the oil pump was going out. Well today I went to take the factory filter off so I could install an oil pressure gauge to see what the pressure actually was. Well when I took off the filter, no oil came out at all. I tipped the filter upside down and still no oil came out of the filter. I drove more than a week, about 15 miles a day with that filter. Just now I went the Checker and picked up a Fram oil filter and put it on and started the car for a few seconds and then cracked the filter off and oil came out. So im starting to think the dealership put the wrong filter on. The car sat since Friday night and I had it towed to my friends house today(Sunday). Could sitting for two days and then being towed on a flatbed, loaded backwards make the oil filter seem empty? The oil filter that the dealership installed is a factory blue Honda filter, made by Honeywell with the part # S90582. Another thing to notice, I watched the guy change my oil and he was new, had only been there a week, so I dunno if maybe he put the wrong filter on. Can anyone tell me what car that filter goes on? I guess even if it was the right filter, it could be defective... Im just wondering if I should still put an oil pressure gauge on anyways to see what the pressure is.

Thanks guys!!!

With the exception of the Honda S2000, the oil filter is the same for the various Hondas now.

BTW: This is the 1990-2002 Accord forum.

I'm not joking. You can check with any Honda dealer or various online sites. The Honda part number usually is 15400-PLM-A02 or a slight variant. The number you listed is a Honeywell number.

You need to get your facts straight before you post. Not until 2001 did Honda make the majority of their oil filters the same, exluding Insight, S2000, etc. Just doing a quick search on Fram's site shows the 92-00 Civic(PH3593A) filter is DIFFERENT than an 01-09 Civic(PH7317) filter... I think I figured this problem out myself...

Your original post was asking whether the dealer installed the wrong filter which was done recently. They probably installed the correct oil filter, which are the new ones. The oil filter they are using now is pretty much the same for most model Honda. The don't carry the old Honda oil filters.

The dealer didn't install the aftermarket Fram filter you are looking at. Just because the aftermarket may use a different number oil filter for your Civic, doesn't mean Honda currently does.

Get your facts straight.

Just wanted to say, when I got my 96 Accord serviced for a emission warranty last year, they changed my oil filter. The filter size was the same with the RSX which uses the newer oil filters. Not the larger one that originally made for the 96 Accord. Just my experience. Either way, a filter is a filter, some engines require a larger one due to their displacement, they shouldn't cause a problem as oil not coming out.

honda used the same oil filters for all models except the s2000 and the very old honda's with the cvcc engines that requires the huge *** one. the insights use to use the very small one, but now they use the regular size ones.

right, the general rule, if it had a carb on it, it was the funny big filter. through the 87 model year for civics, and 89 for accords i think.

the large OD and small OD filters fit the same even though they have different part numbers. the PLM and POH i think... some of the older acura V6's used a unique filter, but that's the exception.

to the OP: what was the oil level? full? i wonder if it was a defective filter that didn't flow properly creating an air bubble so the oil didn't flow into it and missed the sending unit... in any case, check your cam for journal and lobe scaring since there's a possiblity it was starved of oil.

i think there are too many unknowns to reach a conclussion on what the root issue was. if it works fine now, just enjoy it.

The car sitting for 2 days is why it was empty.
