in the summer, use 10w30
in the winter, use 5w30
5w30 is thinner, easier on the engine...

Motor oil was reccommended before Honda made MTF.

Go to the dealership and get Honda MTF, its way in the hell better than motor oil.

+1 on Honda MTF....motor oil can be used only in emergency situations.

I switch depending on the temperature... 5w30 works well when it is Canadian Winter time. 10w30 otherwise.

I used motor oil ever since I bought the car new. There was no such thing as mtf 20 years ago. I recently put mtf in and it seems a little smoother.

Honda owner's manuals from around 1991 and earlier specify ordinary engine oil (10W-30 or 40). But then engine oil chemistry was changed industry-wide, because the zinc in engine oil was leading to early failure of catalytic converters. OTOH, the zinc is key to assisting in "extreme pressure" conditions such as that experienced in gears. The remedy is to use Honda OEM MTF, which has the zinc, or possibly some other MTF with the required additive. Today's ordinary engine oil is not as good for the long run. The good news is that the Homda OEM MTF can stay in much longer, so it is about the same cost as engine oil. Chatter at http://honda.lioness.googlepages.com/manualtrannyfluid

just bought 2 quarts of honda mtf to put in this weekend. I had 10w30 in until i inherited the car, then ran redline MTL for a few thousand miles and liked it. Then went to Redline superlight gear lube which I had great success with in the past and now have a terrible crunch into 2nd at high rpm's. Im pissed for not sticking with what I knew worked, so Im hoping the honda MTF is a bit of a bandaid until i get some money to do a full trans rebuild. The superlight felt SOOO good for the first 3K miles. Buttery smooth and perfect, then it went downhill quick. ****!

Honda MTF is not that expensive. Its like 7 bucks a quart mabye and its not like you change it every 3k anyway. If 15 bucks is too much money you've got the wrong hobby.

yeah, use the honda mtf
i used 10w30 for alot of my cars too.
i liked the mtf better.
my type r had a slight grind in third when i power shifted.
after putting mtf in it, the grind went away...
besides its only 2 quarts, spend the money...

No sorry, it would be way to thick honda's have pretty complicated transmissions. So like said Honda MTF or 10w30 or 10w40 only. Anything else and you will be sorry and wishing you had not. Its only 15 for the honda mtf so why not shell it out you only change it once a year.
