2 Engines: B18A1 & B17 Vtec - What to do with them???
Hey there, I bought a 1992 Acura Integra GSR (B17 Vtec) for $1200.00
The engine is crap.. I have problems starting the car because I have to pump the gas a bit, head gasket is leaking oil, engine idles rough and is making a scratching noise inside the cylinder head... and some other small problems).
So I am thinking of buying a B18A1 NON Vtec with low KM's, (around 50,000KM) for $250. I know I know, B18A's are **** on preformance, but right now I have no options because I am a high school student that doesnt have much money.. So I heared that if you do these two engines up right, you can make decent performance..
My objective is to try and build onto the B18 with B17 parts, because the B18 will last much longer - and use the B17 parts to try and add a higher rev and better performance to the B18. DO YOU THINK THIS IS POSSIBLE - and if so, what has to be done. (A brief rundown would be great) OR, would it jsut be better that I drop that stock B18 in my GSR and call it even??

put the vtec head on the ls block.. all you need is dowl pins, a oil line from the sending unit to the back of the head and get a head gasket and hog the 2 holes out for the dowl pins or just buy a cometic gasket..

I sorta see what your saying, but I'm not sure if its all that safe.. wont a B17 head just bolt onto the B18?
imo you should do the ls-v for now, but dont sell that b17. if you have a true db2 (92-93 gsr) then keep it!!!
if its real then itll say db2 in the vin#
its hard to come by a real db2 now. and i think that while you roll on the ls-v you should build the bottom end of the b17, and when your done with everything put the b17 back in.
ive seen plenty of 18 swapped db2's but imo id stick with the legacy of the b17 and have one killer db2.
i got my 92 gsr for 2300 bucks, in really good condition, just high miles. i waited sooooooo long to find someone selling a complete b17 so i could do the build, and yes it would be easier to use a b18c, but imo stick with the b17 and save the db2!!!!
as far as ls-v, yes its safe, people do it allllll the time. just dont over rev that stock ls bottom end.....

Throw the Ls in and build the B17 over time or just build the head and save to build up the Ls block as well. Either way it doesn't sound like you have a clue as to what you're doing do I wouldn't be doing much of this on your own.
yeah put the ls in keep the gsr and build it that's exactly what i did i took my b17 out and am currently rebuilding it while i'm cruising the ls and it's also alot less time consuming just pull the gsr and put the ls in and you're done
you could put the b17(p61) pistons in the b18a block and put the b17 head(pr3) on the
b18a block and run it like that. consider a 2layer headgasket to bump up the compression and a golden eagle LS-VTEC conversion kit will show you how to do everything. along with some ARP headstuds. good luck

just go lsvtec, its your best bet, lots of people have done them without a hitch and they can be very reliable.
btw you live pretty close to me

dude if i were u i would buy the cheap b18 and swap it into your car and then have a good shop rebuild the b17. forget doing a ls/vtec. 92/93 gsr's are really rare, so why ruin it?
A B17 is rare especially if it's matching VINs with the car. It's not a B18 with a B16 head, it's a bored out B16 made for the 92-93 gsr's. Keep the B17 and build it up, even to factory specs B18A1 ~ 130hp non-vtec B17 ~ 165hp vtec
