Default new to the honda world, need some advice plz

hello everyone, i have a 95 honda civic 2dr. and want to drop a more powerful engine into it. i was told that the b16a2 is a good and pretty quick engine, is this the engine out of the 2000 civic si's? also, is it a straight fit into my car? what all will i need? transmission? ecu? what else? also i am looking into putting a turbo on it when it's all said and done. will this effect the engine life alot? can you turbo a stock honda engine without cutting the engine life in half? i was told by a couple people it will tear the engine apart, and by a few others that it wouldnt cut the engine life in half if i only ran 8lbs of boost, is this true?

sorry for all the questions, i just really would like some answer from people who know what there talking about.

Thanks,
-Bryce

PLEASE feel free to correct me if I am wrong on any of this, but the best thing to do is a search in the forums and the FAQ, alot of your questions are already answered, and as for engine life, if you run too much boost on stock internals you can blow the motor in .5 seconds flat, but if you match the boost with what you got and maintain your car properly there is no reason you can't get a decent amount of life out of the engine, of course it will put more strain on it, and decrease the life some assuming its all stock except turbo, but its all in how you maintain her, and take care of her and what other mods you are doing.

There's a lot of options it all depends on the amount of cash you have, im guessing a shop will do the swap for you. The easiest way to go is b-series either b16a, b18b, b18c.
b16 is the cheapest but less powerful 1.6 less torque. If you go with a b-series is direct drop because the 92-95 civic shares the same engine bay as the integra. You'll need Engine, transmission, axles, shift linkage, ecu, a single cam obd1 ecu can be chipped to run the bigger motor
As far as turbocharging it, stay away from the ebay kits, they're garbage, if it would only take $600 to turbocharge a car my grandma would have a turbo. Try to buy a good complete kit, either new or used, and the amount of boost it'll hold depends on the tuner and program used.
I hope I helped a little, im no expert but i've learned a bit!

okay, thanks guys.

sorry it took so long to reply, have been very busy with work.

but i have finally had time to do some research, and im not sure if i even really want to do a swap anymore.

i was looking at some b18 engines out of the acura integras. but they are kinda expensive.

so i think im just going to do some mod's to my d16 that is already in my civic.

what do you guys think would be the best way to going about doing this?

i want to run quite a bit of boost, and make sure my engine doesn't blow up.

what all will i have to do to the engine in order for it to take around 15 - 20 lbs of boost?

new injectors?

new piston rings?

what?

Thanks,
-Bryce

You could probably get around 200whp out of a stock d series and still maintain some reliability and longevity. But I would recommend a full build. You can't really determine how much an engine will handle based on psi. 15 psi on a a little turbo is completely different than if you were to use a gt42 or somethin. A good t3/t4 turbo will be able to get you around 200whp and you would be happy with that im sure. Then down the road you can decide if you want to build it and go bigger.

okay thank you, i do want to build my engine. i know that for sure.

but what all will i need to do to it to make it better? and more reliable?

will i need to bore out my pistons? or like.. what all will need to be done so i can run more boost to the engine?

sorry if this doesn't make any sense, im kinda new to all of this. =S

Thanks for the help though.

Forged rods and pistons go with a lower compression ratio. A bore wouldn't hurt either. Cranks can be expensive. Just get it inspected. Upgrade the head. Get it ported, cam, springs, etc. Intake manifold and throttle body would be a good thing too. That you can do to squeeze out a few more ponies before you do the build.

First off.. You said that doing an engine swap is to expensive. How is that? compared to you wanting to fully build your SOHC. Building your SOHC and putting a turbo on it to make like 20-30whp more than a B18C will cost way more than it would to do a swap. I just paid 5800 for complete remove and install JDM B18C w/LSD Stage 4 CC Clutch and flywheel, CAI,DC Headers, Full Cat-Back exhaust, Mishimoto radiator. I put down 171whp with that. Its a lot cheaper to do a swap.

Are you serious? 5800 for 171 whp? You can make more than that on a d series without a build. Gonna cost waaay less than 5800.

just for a complete decent turbo kit is 3000 and that will put a SOHC at like 170. Thats for a cheap kit without any tuning or computer stuff. and on stock SOHC no internals you can run that much boost so to put out much more you have to start messing with internals and thats more money and eventually your going to top off on your HP way before a DOHC would. But thats just my $.02. Im all for a strong SOHC but if considering a DOHC and saying its to expensive is crazy.

Off the shelf turbo kits can cost you 3g's but thats way overpriced. You can piece it together for half that and be tuned out the door makin around 200 for less that the cost of a GSR. Me personally I still went with the GSR. But for 5800 that's a little steep for 171 whp. You didn't do any of it yourself?

I totally agree with you on piecing one together that can be just as good or even better. But for some people tehy dont want to do research and find out and learn about turbos and what they need and how to do it. But me i am going to piece one together shortly for my JDM B18C. Well first off i live in hawaii so had to get it shipped across waters so thats a little bit of money there. And no i dont have a garage or anything here so i couldnt do it myslef. If i was back home in VA then yes i would of done everything myself and saved a lot of money. But 171whp with only bolt ons is good bro.

No no. Don't get me wrong. 171 with bolts isn't bad at all. More than what I got haha. 5800 just seems high for 171whp. Just seems like that kinda money could have gotten you some better numbers. But seeing as how you can't do any of yourself right now then thats nothing to complain about.

well the motor came from HMotors for like 2900 then another 350 for LSD then 400 for shipping that right tehre is 3650 then remove old Y8 then install everything done super clean i dont think is bad at all. But i also didnt really have to pay for anything because i sold my 95 wrangler for 5800 so everything was paid from that and only bought the car for 1500 sold the Y8 for 300. Bought a 97 4 door for 1800 sold it in 3 days for 2500 ha. So i really didnt pay anything for the car or complete swap. and body is in super good condition.

yeah well shoot all i did was buy the 4 door wash it clean the inside spray paint the grill and windshield wipers and bame $700 extra to my pocket. It is so easy to make extra cash like that. I am goign to keep doing it until i pay for my turbo kit. ha i dont plan on spending any money out of my bank for anythign on the car which would be so sick.
