Default Problems with Tachometer and spedometer post swap

I made my 98 civic a manual with the same exact engine from a 99 civic and now some of my gauges are not working at all. The ecu I used came straight from the 99 civic along with the motor harness. Is this the issue? I still have the 98 atuo ecu. Is there anything special I have to make it work or am I using the wrong ecu/harness?

It really sucks not knowing exactly how fast I'm going when passing a speed trap set up by cops lol.

Check whether fuse 25 under the dash is blown.

Also check the connectors and their pins at the rear of the gauge assembly.

Fuse is good and all is plugged up fine.

Not at all. Which makes me think something is unplugged... or is the ecu or something.

I also found this:



Does it have anything to do with the speedometer because I can't find anything it plugs up to.

It may be C136, which seems to have wires for the AT that you no longer have.

The tach gets its signal from the ICM in the distributor. Check the blue wire and its connection there. It's also possible that the ICM needs to be replaced.

With respect to the speedometer problem, do the odometer and tripmeter work fine or not?

Check the VSS atop the transmission and its power and ground wires, as well as the wire that goes to the gauge assembly. Is fuse 15 under the dash blown?

The VSS was fine when the engine/tranny was in the other car. Fuse 15 is fine.

I'll check the ground for the VSS though

VSS:

The Blk wire is ground.

The Blk/Yel wire is power.

The third wire sends speed signals to the gauge assembly and ECU. Check its continuity.

See my post above. Check all three VSS wires with a multimeter. Also check the VSS connector pins for damage.

You have to use a '96 - '98 harness in a '96 - '98 cars or you will have these issues, you must also use a '96 - '98 distributor (the plugs are different between '96 - '98 and '99 - '00 D-series distributors)

'99 - '00 Civics (except HX coupes) get their tach signal from the ECU, the blue wire from the igniter is missing, '00 - '01 Integra are setup the same way as well.
I'm using the 99 distributor because I just took the engine and transmission as a whole. What is the way to fix all of it? I am running the 99 ecu with the 99 motor harness.

You are correct, as usual. Thanks for the clarification.

In this case, the OP should look for continuity on the blue wire between the ECU and tach in the gauge assembly. It's also possible that the tach itself is bad.

Use a '96 - '98 Engine harness, distributor and ECU, its as simple as that, with the setup you currently have thats exactly what should be happening.

Using the harness and ECU the OP has will result in just exactly whats happening here. There really isn't any point in investigating any further. Posted below is a comparison of OBD2A and OBD2B harnesses, pay close attention to the green plug, this is what connects the engine harness to the underdash harness, note how the OBD2B green plug uses fewer wires, theres a reason for this.
