major wheelspin into 3rd on 245 tyres at what size slick should i use
gday there i have no people to consult with this ? as all my friends are v8 heads, short story 230whp 1990ls da9 1.8 stock running 17psi just ran it and cant get a good 1/4time due to wheelspin issues even with 245,50,14s my best mph was 116 im wondering what size slick would be best to help lower my 1/4 as best so far is 13.6 and also would it be best to make solid rear struts to keep the weight transfer over the front more and hold it down to keep more weight over the tyre? what size slick have you run? i was crossing the line in 4th at approx 6500-7000rpm but its peak power was 5800-6000 but didnt want to change gear to lose the time taken to hit 5th and boost up again?
What kind of tires are you using? Are you using slicks or drag radials, or are you using crappy street tires? Lots of people make the mistake of thinking that they need wider tires for better traction. The width of the tire is only a relatively minor factor when it comes to performance. What really matters is how sticky the tire is designed to be, in terms of its compound, tread pattern, etc. A stickier but slightly narrower tire will virtually always give better grip than a tire that is less sticky but slightly wider.
thanx for the input guys, in reply i tried several different tyre pressures and they were street tyres bfgoodrich radial t/a, which i tried 40psi,30psi,25,18and finally 15psi with best results at 15psi, i was also changing gears slow i guess it wasnt 1 constant burnout but as soon as full boost would come in it would break out straight away. and with the higher spring rate in the rear i was thinking of running solid rear bars instead of shocks and springs for the strip to keep all the weight over the front tyres and keep the rear slightly higher. i feel a 24.5-8-14 or 15 slick should be sufficient to take away abit of the acceleration to help grip and help my half track grip and top end also and run 8-10psi in the slicks. its hard trying to find any info on the slicks but my friend has filled me in that if i want it to rise less i should use a fatter rim for the slick or skinnier to increase height when warm. but then also wats best to run on the rear a drag style front runner or stock 195-60-14?
the nitto 555R is available in either a 195 0r 205 55 14 and is a great dual purpose drive to the track and drag race tire. mickey thompson makes some of the best drag slicks but they aren't something you want to drive on the street....at all.
nitto tyres are most likely not even available in australia, im not planning on putting the slicks on for the street at all coz they wont last long at all, mickey thompsons ive tracked down in a 24.5-8.5x14 and a place to deepdish my rims to 7'' wide so when i get time il measure my car to get the offset rite and also fit arp wheel studs, that oughta keep the wheel attached to the car.
