Having a hard time shifting from 1st to 2nd.
Hey H-T,
I own a 1991 Honda Civic Si, with a B16a in it. I don't know what transmission is in it. I'm having trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd, any idea what it could be?

It could be many things but I would start with the simple stuff and move on from there. I would start with making sure your clutch cable is adjusted. I would then consider changing out your manual transmission fluid. If that does now improve things its most likely a internal transmission problem which would require you to drop it and open her up and examine the syncro gears and the shift forks.
Clutch cable has been adjusted many times. Have not changed out the tranny fluid. I was told it might be the clutch itself? I have no idea. Do you know how to check what transmission it is?
there should be a stamp or sticker on it sayin which trans it is... y1/j1/ys1 etc... secondly drain ur trans fluid an put 10w30 in it an see if it helps2 1/2 quarts.. if not then u gotta open it up
you may also want to try and see if there is flex in the cable, get someone to push the clutch in while you examine the cable and make sure you have full movement at the clutch fork, if all is good you can try gm synchromesh, lastly you can open it up and check your clutch.
also before all that check your shift linkage.

It could possibly be a sticking throw-out bearing or broken pressure plate tooth but then you would be having trouble shifting into all gears.
I always use the Honda stuff but I have heard people having luck with the GM syncromesh smoothing out shifts. I also think that you might just be temporarily fixing a problem if it's really grinding and the fluid helps somewhat.
I would start with the cheapest fix first and move on from there-
-Check the cable
-Change the fluid
-Drop the trans and check the clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing (make sure its greased)
-Have someone open the transmission up and check the syncros and forks.
Good Luck
