to the OP: it has as much to do with the clutch as it does the transmission.. on a cable actuated clutch transmission (i.e. 1st/2nd gen integra, etc.) the clutch uses a cable to actuate the gear shifting mechanism. with a hydraulic transmission, the clutch uses fluid (brake fluid) and a hydraulic line, rather than a cable, to operate.
