Default Stopping the cancer! Rust/Paint Peeling - Rear Quarter Panel

As of right now the damage seems fairly minimal, but what should I do about the paint peeling back, I know I need to sand the rusted metal parts and cover it with paint.

How much do I need to sand, it looks like messing with the paint may make it chip off toward the edge of the lip there...

I would tape off the edge, sand all the cancer off of the lip, maybe re-tape if the sandpaper scuffed it up too much. Cover that whole area of the car for overspray protection and then spray the lip with rubberized undercoating. It's black so you won't notice it too much, and how often are you that low looking at your car anyhow?

I think re-painting that area would be a nightmare for such a minor paint issue.

Seeing as it's for sale and you have no plans to keep it, I'd just undercoat it as well.

Wrong car that one is not for sale, no rust afaik on the one for sale.

edit: and thanks for the advice. I'll pick up the black underspray stuff, your right, I doubt it will be noticeable I was planning on just taping it off and using the red Rustoleam paint and brushing it on for the same reason (not generally visible).

No need to cut it out, its nowhere near as far gone as that crx

Sand all the rust away till you're back to shiny metal, then paint it - personally id paint it red to match your car but nothing wrong with using underbody seal either, just wouldnt look as nice!

UPDATES

Basic prep before I sanded

Car on jack stands, lol I thought I might not have to remove tire xD, it was a pita even after I did...

Almost there... Keep going... I still see Rust!

Rubberize stuff, messy as fawk, does NOT take 10 minutes to dry, takes at least a day in a dry warmed garage... (although it is raining outside and quite cold... so not 100% ideal conditions)

**** said it was paintable... Why not... Said Milano Red on the lid...

Probably do another coat of the red stuff

I haven't touched the other side yet, but I'm kinda happy how this came out, yes I got overspray behind the panel with the red, but only on the top part... If its bad I guess I can always put more of that nasty rubberized undercoat on it...
