i want to know how to bleed the coolent because i replaced the hose that was torn and i want to know how to bleed the coolent. can air affect power loss in any way?

 

If you replaced a hose, you need to top off the coolant and let it bleed air out. It won't affect power loss, but it will prevent your car from circulating coolant and your engine will likely overheat. Take the radiator cap off and fill it with water/coolant mixture. Let the car run with the cap off and let the air bubbles come out. When bubbles stop forming, you have bled all of the air out.

 

would you really even need to do this. i mean, shouldn't the system just do it on its own? never heard of any power issues like that before...

 

Follow the steps at either (1) autozone.com's free online manual for your Civic; or (2) your Civic's owner's manual. The one big caveat is to understand that, from cold start to full warm up so that the rad fan comes on twice (as required by the air purge procedure) may take up to 60 minutes. I think worst case when I purged the air in winter, it took around 45 minutes. Best case on a very hot summer day, it took only 20 minutes or so.

Air in the cooling system can have a number of effects. The easiest to explain is how various engine sensors not being fully submerged in coolant will cause the sensors to send invalid signals to the ECU. Definitely purge the air anytime the cooling system has been opened, following the manual to the letter. Do not wing this one.

 

What year Civic? 5th generations have a bleeder bolt whereas 6th generations do not.

 

i have a 1994 del sol b16 vtec and it does have the bleeder bolt. i just dont how to do it with the car on or off with the radiator cap on or off.

 

Set the heater lever/**** to MAX heat and then follow these instructions:

if you don't have a bleeder bolt, fill your radiator to the top...

you can run your car for a while with the radiator cap off and fill as the air works its way through the system...

OR

you can drive around, then let your car cool down... top off the radiator... and repeat until you can't top it off anymore... just make sure the coolant has cooled down before taking the cap off!!!
