On a b16a you will probably looking for the Coolant Temp Sensor. If this is not working properly this sensor is probably dead. It's on the head right below the upper radiator hose. It's a 1 prong plug.
Thermostat is a mechanical device to control the flow of coolant.
The coolant temp sensor is a two wire sensor in the head under the distributor. It sends info directly to the ECU.
The Coolant temp sending unit is a one wire sensor in the head that sends info only to the guage cluster. If your temp guage is not working check this circuit.

the thermostat is located on the block. its inside the top hose going to the radiator. disconnect that hose from the block and you will see it there. just replace it and go over it with silicone. and u should be fine.
The thermostat is purely mechanical and has nothing to do with his temp guage not functioning. He has an electrical problem between the Temp Sending Unit and his guage cluster.
Just as an FYI though if you go to an autoparts store to buy a new one, they have it listed as a Coolant Temp sensor for the sending unit, atleast thats how Advance Auto Parts had it, they had to pull both parts to make sure I got the correct one. Make sure you get the 1 prong if your gauge isnt working.
