Default Code 17 VSS with a cable not electronic

alright here is my situation

i'm throwing a code 17 VSS

my car is a 1990 Honda Civic 4dr
i'm running a D16Z6 Engine with a Cable driven VSS ( 88 crx dx tranny )
my ecu is OBD1 p28 ( tuned on crome ) and my engine wiring is all obd1
i am not using a obd0-obd1 convertion harness it is rewired completely for obd1

my speedo works fine... rpm works fine and speedo works fine
my cluster is USDM not JDM

i know that the obd1 ecu requires a electronic vss... and maybe that is why i am throwing a code.... or can i still run a cable vss on obd1 ecu's ???

help help help
everything works fine... i just wanna get rid of the code....

i think that you will always have the code, cuz obd1 uses electronic. you should be fine

no you should not always have the code. obd0 ecu's have an electronic speedo input, same as obd1/2. the cable turning in the gauge cluster is converted into an electronic signal, which is then sent back out to the ecu. if your speedometer is working this leads me to believe you miswired something at the ecu. on the obd0 harness the wire is yellow and would of been at b16. the obd1 wire color is orange, and should go to b10 on your ecu.

EDIT: dang you beat me to it.

If your speedo works. Theres probley a short or a bad conection somewhere between your cluster and the ecu. The OBD0 clusters converts the cable spining to a elctrice signal for your ecu.

I don't remember the pin #s at ether the cluster or the ecu. If you have a repair manual it should tell you what to look for. I also think theres a PDF file for the repair manual in the FAQs.

When I had this problem,
I eventually had to replace the instrument cluster
to make it go away..

Here is the actual gismo in the speedometer
that is considered the "speed sensor.."

Before I swapped in the B16,
I just removed the check engine light bulb and drove it..

{It may or may not have effected the idle sometimes..}

Since VTEC engaugement relies on the VSS signal,
I did replace the cluster when I changed engines..

i believe with crome, and with your current situation, if your speedo is working just fine, you may want to take into consideration of running a chipped ecu to engage the vtec at a rpm specified range, disabling the speedometer input.

also, is your vtec engaging still with this code still going?

Isn't there only one setting for vtec engagement (I forgot at what rpm, 4000?) with crome?
